A Struggle Near The Sunflowers
The fawn pulled its front leg, but the bright blue plastic strap held firm against its slender ankle. It tugged again, the tension of the cord vibrating against the weathered wooden fence post. The creature’s head dipped low, ears twitching at the sound of tires humming along the nearby pavement.
Every movement of the fawn caused the blue nylon to bite deeper into its delicate fur. It stood on three legs, the fourth trapped in a tight, tangled loop that tethered it to the earth. The sunflower field behind the post swayed in the breeze, a sea of yellow petals that starkly contrasted with the man-made object trapping the young animal.
The Approach
A white pickup truck pulled over to the side of the gravel shoulder. A man in a blue work shirt stepped out, his boots crunching loudly on the loose stones. He did not rush, but moved with a measured, calm gait toward the fence line.
The fawn froze, its large, dark eyes tracking the man’s every move. When he reached the post, the man knelt on the hard ground. He reached out with steady hands, his fingers brushing the animal’s coat. The fawn stayed still, its breathing heavy and visible against its ribcage.
Releasing The Bonds
The man began to work at the knot with his thumb and forefinger. He shifted his weight, leaning into the task to avoid causing the animal any further strain. The blue strap was pulled tight, layered multiple times around the wood and the fawn’s leg.
He carefully manipulated the material, his eyes fixed on the point where the strap met the fawn’s skin. Slowly, the tension began to yield. A final tug of the nylon loop loosened the bind completely, and the man pulled the plastic away from the fawn’s limb. He tossed the blue cord aside, letting it drop into the weeds.
A New Freedom
He stood up and gently placed a hand on the fawn’s back, feeling the soft texture of its spotted coat. The fawn stood firmly on all four legs now, testing its weight on the limb that had been trapped moments before.
The man ushered the fawn toward the open bed of his truck. He walked slowly, guiding the small creature up onto a folded blanket resting on the seat inside the cab. The fawn stepped onto the soft fabric and settled into a lying position, folding its legs neatly beneath itself. The man sat behind the steering wheel and pulled back onto the road, the fawn resting its head against the upholstery as they drove past the blooming sunflowers. The animal looked out through the glass as the fields blurred into a streak of gold.
