The Unseen Struggle
An elderly man sits in a small, folding camping chair in the middle of a bustling fairground. His hands are pressed tightly against his ears. His eyes are closed shut. Around him, the sky erupts in brilliant, colorful bursts of light.
A younger man with a thick beard, wearing a leather jacket and an American flag t-shirt, stands over him. He leans in close, talking, his lips moving rapidly. He holds a red plastic cup in one hand.
The older man’s knuckles turn white from the pressure of his palms against his head. He rocks slightly back and forth in his chair. He does not look at the younger man. He remains locked in his own space.
Breaking Through The Noise
The man in the leather jacket stops talking. He moves his hand from the air and places it firmly, but slowly, onto the older man’s shoulder. His expression shifts, the lines around his mouth softening.
The older man finally lowers his hands from his ears. He keeps his gaze fixed ahead. He begins to speak, his mouth moving slowly as he describes something from the past.
The younger man nods. He rolls up his sleeves to reveal tattoos on his forearms. He leans down, bringing his face level with the older man’s. They look at each other as the sky above them flashes with bright white light.
A Bond Beyond Words
The older man touches his own forearm. He looks at the younger man’s arm, where names are inked into the skin. He points to them with a shaky finger. The younger man tilts his head, listening intently.
The man in the leather jacket pulls his shirt slightly open at the neck, showing a dog tag hanging against his chest. He points to the metal plate. He touches the shoulder of the man in the chair again, holding his hand there for a long moment.
The younger man kneels down. He speaks into the older man’s ear, his tone dropping. The older man exhales a long, slow breath. His shoulders, which had been pulled up toward his ears, drop down toward his waist.
The Final Connection
The older man looks up into the younger man’s eyes. His grip on his own chair loosens. His fingers rest flat against the fabric of his plaid shirt.
The man in the leather jacket remains beside him, his hand firm on the older man’s arm. They sit together in the folding chair, watching the horizon as the final streaks of light fade into the dark.
