A Sudden Encounter On The Pavement
The small alligator sat perfectly still on the asphalt, its mouth held wide open toward the sky. A metal fishhook dangled from its upper jaw, catching the sunlight as the creature rested near the edge of the lake. Its scaly tail lay flat against the gravel, and the beast made no move to scramble into the nearby water.
A vehicle rolled to a stop just a few feet away. A man stepped out from the driver’s side and walked toward the small reptile. He approached with measured, deliberate steps, his eyes focused entirely on the metal barb embedded in the alligator’s soft tissue.
The Delicate Extraction Process
The man crouched down on the road, settling onto his knees beside the animal. He reached out and placed one hand firmly but gently over the alligator’s head, applying just enough pressure to keep the jaw stable. With his other hand, he pulled a pair of pliers from his side.
The metal tips of the tool clicked together as he positioned them against the hook. He made a quick, decisive motion, twisting the tool to back the barb out of the skin. The metal wire slid free from the snout, and he pulled it away from the animal’s face.
He didn’t pull his hands away immediately. Instead, he reached for a small plastic spray bottle from his gear. He misted the area around the alligator’s jaw, the fine droplets coating the scales. He worked quickly, his fingers moving with practiced efficiency to ensure the area was treated.
Returning To The Water
Once the treatment was finished, the man stood up and stepped aside, giving the alligator space to move. He nudged the animal with the toe of his boot, guiding it toward the shoreline. The alligator shifted its weight, its legs churning as it crawled across the remaining patch of pavement.
It moved toward the bank, the water waiting just a few inches away. The man stood nearby, his hands hanging loosely at his sides, watching the creature’s progress. The alligator reached the soft mud, slid into the shallow water, and submerged beneath the surface. The man remained on the road for a moment longer, looking at the spot where the alligator had vanished, before turning back toward his vehicle.
