A Shelter Under the Log
Three white cats crouched beneath a damp, moss-covered log, their mouths open in persistent cries. The gray sky pressed low against the dark pine trees, and a thin mist clung to the gravel shoulder. Cars rushed past on the wet asphalt, their tires humming against the pavement.
An elderly man in a dark wool coat and a flat cap stepped out of his vehicle. He approached the log slowly, his boots crunching against the wet stones. He knelt on the gravel, his knees pressing into the cold, damp ground as he reached toward the small, shivering creatures.
Turning Back for the Family
The man stood up, carefully lifting the mother cat and her two kittens from the muddy ditch. He walked back to his car, his movement steady and deliberate. He placed them inside the cabin, shielding them from the biting wind whipping through the forest.
The car door latched shut, muffling the roar of the passing traffic. Inside the vehicle, the man gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles pale against the leather. He navigated the winding, fog-drenched road, keeping his gaze fixed on the asphalt ahead while the cats settled onto the fabric of the passenger seat.
Finding Warmth and Safety
The engine quieted as the vehicle pulled into a driveway. He opened the door, and the three cats moved from the car into the light of a wooden-floored home. The man walked to the kitchen, his gait slow and measured as he carried the bowls of food.
He sat on the floor, his back against the wall, watching as the cats leaned their heads over the ceramic dishes. The mother cat pressed her fur against his hand, and he stroked the soft white hair along her spine. The house was quiet, the only sound the rhythmic crunching of dry food against the bowls.
The old man stayed on the floor, his hand resting gently on the mother’s shoulder. The sunlight filtered through the nearby window, casting long, soft shadows across the rug. The kittens finished their meal and curled into a small, white heap, their breathing leveling out as they slept on the warm floorboards.
