A Discovery on the Asphalt
The grey dove lay flattened against the baking asphalt, her wings splayed unevenly across the rough surface of the road. She remained perfectly still as a white sedan approached from the distance, its tires humming against the pavement. The car swerved slightly, passing by with a rush of wind that didn’t even cause the bird to blink or tuck her feathers.
Three tiny, downy chicks huddled just inches from her, their small heads bobbing in the warm breeze. They didn’t move away, staying pressed close to their mother’s side as a second, larger vehicle approached and slowed to a halt nearby. A man stepped out from the driver’s seat, his boots clicking against the hard surface of the road.
A Gentle Intervention
He walked toward the group with a steady pace, his eyes fixed on the motionless bird. Bending his knees, he lowered himself into a crouch until he was eye-level with the small family. He reached into his pocket and produced a clear plastic bottle filled with water, twisting the cap off with a focused, deliberate motion.
The man tilted the bottle, letting a stream of water trickle over the dove’s back and neck, wetting her dry, dusty feathers. He moved his fingers across her wing, checking for movement or response as the water darkened her plumage. She showed no signs of struggle, her body remaining limp under his careful, practiced touch.
Restoration of Strength
After moistening the dove, he carefully lifted her from the asphalt and placed her into a plastic bin filled with fresh water. He held her securely, supporting her chest with one hand while her feet dangled in the shallow basin. The chicks remained on the side of the road, observing the movement as the man continued to monitor their mother’s breathing.
The man reached for a handful of grain, holding his palm flat near the ground where the three chicks were standing. The birds shifted forward, pecking at the scattered seeds as the mother dove began to stir in the bin. She shifted her weight, her head lifting as she regained her bearings in the coolness of the water.
The Final Moments
The chicks continued to feed, their small beaks working quickly through the grain provided by the man. He remained crouched on the edge of the road, his hand resting near the ground to ensure they had enough space to eat without interruption. The dove stood fully upright in the bin, her feathers shaking off the excess water as she prepared to rejoin her offspring.
He slowly withdrew his hand, watching as the mother stepped toward the chicks while they pecked at the last remaining crumbs on the pavement. The man shifted his weight back onto his heels, looking down as the small family moved together along the shoulder of the road, away from the path of the traffic.
