A Struggle On The Asphalt
The small white puppy’s front paws clawed uselessly at the jagged, crumbling edges of the blacktop. It was wedged firmly into a deep pothole that had split the yellow dividing lines of the road.
Its companion, a slightly larger white terrier, paced nervously around the opening. The terrier leaned forward, sniffing the puppy’s head and nudging at it with its nose, but the gap in the road was too deep.
The puppy’s hindquarters were completely obscured by the dark cavity. It stretched its neck upward, looking at the terrier, its mouth open in a thin, whimpering sound.
A Gentle Rescue
A car drove down the quiet, green-bordered lane and swerved just in time to avoid the pair. The terrier stood its ground, tail twitching, while the puppy remained pinned in the earth.
Then, an elderly man in a tweed jacket stepped out from his vehicle. He approached the crack in the road with a measured, careful stride.
He knelt on the rough surface, his knees pressing into the asphalt. He reached both hands deep into the hole, wrapping his fingers around the puppy’s midsection.
The man applied a steady, upward pressure. He lifted the puppy clear of the jagged stone and pulled it close to his chest, cradling its small body against his coat.
A Return To Quiet
The terrier followed close behind the man as they walked back to the parked blue car. The man opened the passenger door, and the terrier hopped inside, settling into the gray cloth seat.
The puppy was placed gently beside its friend. The man sat behind the steering wheel, adjusted his grip, and pulled the vehicle back onto the winding road, leaving the hole behind.
Later, the scene shifted to a patch of green grass in front of a stone cottage. The man sat cross-legged on the lawn with two ceramic bowls set out before him.
He picked up a piece of food from his own plate and chewed it slowly. The terrier and the puppy stood over their respective bowls, tails wagging as they ate.
The sunlight caught the white fur of the dogs as they moved comfortably across the yard. The man watched them, his hand occasionally reaching down to stroke the puppy’s ears as the terrier finished its meal and looked toward the house.
