Woman Finds Injured Fawn On Highway And Safely Rescues It Home

A fragile form on the gravel

The fawn lies perfectly still on the narrow, gravel shoulder of the highway. Its spotted coat is pressed flat against the rough gray stones. Two black crows stand just inches away, their heads tilting rhythmically as they inspect the motionless animal. Cars and heavy trucks roar past them, sending gusts of wind that ruffle the birds’ feathers and the fawn’s soft fur.

The fawn does not flicker an ear or lift its head as the vehicles rush by. One crow steps closer, its beak hovering near the fawn’s ear, then pulls back to look at its companion. They remain stationed on either side of the small creature, marking a stark, dark contrast against the pale gravel. The traffic continues in a relentless blur of motion.

A sudden approach

A white pickup truck slows down, its tires crunching onto the loose gravel as it pulls to a stop ahead of the scene. A door opens, and a person steps out, walking with long, measured strides toward the animals. As she nears, the two crows spread their wings and take flight, disappearing into the air above the grassy embankment.

She stops a few feet away, her eyes fixed on the fawn. The animal remains curled in a tight ball, its breathing shallow and steady. She squats down, balancing on the balls of her feet to bring herself level with the small creature. She extends her hands, fingers splayed, and slowly lowers them onto the fawn’s back.

The weight of the rescue

Her touch is feather-light. She moves her hands from the fawn’s shoulder down along its spine, checking for any immediate signs of injury. The fawn lifts its head, eyes widening as it looks up at her. She keeps her movements slow, murmuring something soft under her breath while her palms press gently into the fawn’s sides to gauge its strength.

She slides her arms firmly beneath the fawn’s chest and haunches. With a steady, calculated lift, she stands up, drawing the creature against her chest. The fawn hangs limply in her arms, its legs dangling toward her knees. She holds it tight, shielding its head with her forearm as she turns back toward the open door of the truck. She walks with a focused gait, ignoring the continued rumble of the road behind her.

A new place to rest

The scene shifts to a wide, open grassy field at dusk. The white truck is parked on a gravel path near a wooden barn. She steps onto a wooden ramp leading from the truck bed, cradling the fawn in her arms. Her boots make soft thuds on the wood as she carefully steps down onto the grass.

She bends her knees to set the fawn down in the thick, green clover. Her hands remain on its back for a second longer, smoothing its fur before she pulls them away. The fawn stays lying down, looking at its surroundings, then shifts its weight and pushes up onto its front knees. It lifts itself fully, wobbling slightly on thin, spindly legs as it takes a tentative step forward into the grass.
