The Unexpected Discovery
A bright yellow and orange parrot lies still on the side of a narrow asphalt road, surrounded by dense jungle greenery. Right beside her, two small, pink, featherless chicks sit in the dirt with their beaks held wide open, making faint, rhythmic calls.
A dark Toyota pickup truck drives slowly down the road toward them. The tires crunch against the gravel edge, but the driver pulls to a stop just a few feet away from the vulnerable group. The engine idles as the driver steps out, his eyes locked on the small birds.
He approaches them on his hands and knees, keeping his body low to the ground. The mother parrot remains motionless, her eyes tracking the man’s every move as he reaches out. He carefully touches her back, identifying a patch of missing feathers and what appears to be a wound.
A Moment of Care
He reaches into his bag and pulls out a small plastic bottle filled with liquid. He gently tips the bottle, letting drops of water fall into the parrot’s open beak. She drinks eagerly, her head tilting with each small swallow.
The man maintains a steady, calm rhythm. He uses his fingers to smooth the feathers on the parrot’s back while checking the area around the injury. The two chicks continue to vibrate and peep, their necks stretched toward the sky.
He shifts his position to bring them all together. He places a soft, white cloth into a shallow cardboard box. With practiced, deliberate movements, he lifts the mother parrot and tucks her into the center of the towel.
The Journey Home
The chicks are guided toward her side, where they huddle instinctively against her warmth. The man adjusts the cloth to ensure they are shielded from the direct sun and the hard floor of the box.
He picks up the box with both hands, balancing it carefully so as not to disturb their fragile forms. He walks toward the open passenger door of the truck, moving with slow, measured steps to keep the box level.
Once inside the vehicle, he places the box securely onto the passenger seat. The mother parrot, now sitting upright in the soft cloth, turns her head to look at her surroundings. She remains close to her chicks, her bright colors contrasting against the white towel as the man begins to drive them away from the roadside.
