An Unexpected Standoff on the Highway
A massive elk with sprawling antlers lowered its body onto the asphalt, effectively plugging the two lanes of the mountain road. The creature shifted its weight, keeping its head held high while drivers in idling trucks and sedans watched from behind their windshields.
The elk suddenly pushed itself up, its hooves clattering against the pavement as it rose to its full height. It turned toward a white SUV, leaning its snout near the open window while the occupants inside looked on. For a long, silent minute, the animal dominated the space between the vehicles.
It paced slowly down the yellow lines dividing the road, seemingly unbothered by the metallic hum of the stalled traffic. Then, with a sudden change of heart, it turned toward the brush. A small fawn approaches the trough, placing its nose against the surface of the water right next to the larger elk. The adult pauses its drinking to nudge the young one, their silhouettes framed against the expansive, sunlit valley.
