A Cold Encounter in the Autumn Park
A woman in a sharp black suit walks briskly along the park path, her eyes fixed on the illuminated screen of the smartphone in her palm. The elderly woman sitting on the wooden bench barely registers her presence, her hand resting rhythmically on the golden retriever lying across her lap.
The woman in the suit stops, her posture stiff and her shoulders pulled toward her ears. She gestures sharply toward the park bench, her mouth moving in a quick, clipped command. Without waiting for a response, she reaches out and tilts the cup held in her left hand, letting the hot coffee cascade downward.
Dark liquid splashes over the fabric of the elderly woman’s worn, oversized coat. The elderly woman bows her head, her hands coming up to cover her face. The woman in the suit turns on her heel and continues walking, leaving the damp patch on the bench as the dog raises its head, its eyes following the sound of her receding footsteps.
The Tables Turn Suddenly
The golden retriever stands up, its tail level with its spine. It trots down the paved path, eyes locked on the woman in the black suit as she reaches the door of a sleek, black convertible parked at the curb. The dog does not bark or growl, but simply maintains its pace, closing the distance between them.
As the woman pulls out her keys, the dog continues toward the vehicle. A small pack of other dogs emerges from the shadows of the nearby trees, trailing behind the golden retriever. They move with purposeful, quiet coordination, weaving around a large metal trash bin that sits on the sidewalk.
The woman in the suit glances at her watch, oblivious to the pack gathering behind her. She slips into the driver’s seat of the car, leaving the top down. One by one, the dogs trot toward the open car doors and the low walls of the vehicle’s frame. They climb into the cabin, their paws landing on the leather interior.
A Chaotic Homecoming
The interior of the convertible quickly becomes a swirl of fur and movement. The dogs press their snouts into the bags of trash they have dragged from the dumpster, shaking plastic wrappers and food remnants across the pristine seats. The woman in the suit lunges toward the driver’s side, her eyes widening as she sees the back seat filled with scavenged debris.
She throws her hands into the air, her jaw locking and her body swaying backward away from the car. She reaches out as if to push them away, but the dogs continue to shuffle through the bags, settling into the gaps between the console and the floorboards. Pieces of discarded food land on the center display, and a plastic grocery bag drifts across the steering wheel.
The woman pulls her hands away, pressing them against her own face as the air fills with the rustle of plastic and the sound of heavy paws on leather. She stands by the driver’s side door, her shoulders hunching and her fingers digging into her temples as the golden retriever remains in the passenger seat, staring through the windshield. The scene inside the car remains a tangle of discarded waste and calm, stationary animals, while the woman remains on the pavement, watching the clutter spread across her upholstery.
