A Confrontation On The Asphalt
The German Shepherd lunges, its head snapping toward the mother swan. She hunches low, her wings splayed wide to form a protective canopy over the gray, fuzzy bodies of her cygnets. Feathers drift across the dark pavement like falling snow as the dog circles, barking sharply. The swan hisses, her long, elegant neck curved into a rigid, defensive bow.
Traffic continues to crawl past on the shoulder, the metal frames of cars reflecting the harsh midday sun. The mother swan stretches her neck, snapping her bill at the dog, but the canine remains persistent. The cygnets stay bunched tightly against the base of the swan, their small heads ducked low. Every time the dog pushes forward, the mother rises up, wings beating against the air, yet she refuses to abandon her station.
A Shift In The Balance
A man steps from the driver’s side of a parked Chevrolet truck. He carries a red fire extinguisher in his right hand, the metal canister catching the bright light. He approaches the center of the road, his boots crunching against the scattered down feathers. The dog notices the movement and turns its attention toward him, teeth bared.
The man pulls the pin on the extinguisher and directs a sudden, controlled burst of white foam toward the pavement. The cloud erupts, thick and opaque, momentarily blinding the dog. The canine recoils, stumbling back as the man steps firmly between the dog and the swan. The swan keeps her position, her wings still arched, but her breathing slows as the man maintains his ground.
Restoring The Path To Water
The man lowers the extinguisher and kneels on the asphalt. He reaches into the bed of his truck and retrieves a plastic gallon jug of water. He unscrews the cap with a steady hand, letting the clear liquid pour gently into a shallow metal tray. The mother swan dips her bill, the cygnets immediately crowding around the rim of the tray to feed alongside her.
He keeps one hand extended, palm down, resting near the edge of the tray. The swan stays calm, her feathers settling back against her body as she eats the grain. The man remains hunkered down, his presence acting as a buffer between the busy road and the birds. He waits, his gaze tracking the movement of the cygnets as they push into one another, pecking at the food.
The Final Return
The man stands up, shifting his weight as he prepares for their departure. The swan gathers her young, turning her body away from the truck. She waddles slowly toward the grassy bank, her cygnets following in a single-file line. She slips into the cool, dark water of the lake, the surface rippling behind her as they glide toward the far shore. The cygnets trail behind her, their bodies buoyed by the lake, leaving the quiet road behind.
