Fisherman Carefully Cuts Tangled Fishing Net Off Stranded Pelican At Sunset

A Tangled Struggle On The Pier

The brown pelican stood still on the weathered wooden planks of the dock, its body tightly wound in thick, green nylon fishing netting. Each time the bird shifted its weight, the coarse fibers dug deeper into its feathers, pulling at its wings and neck. It stood motionless against the backdrop of the setting sun, a prisoner to the debris that lay scattered around it on the boards.

A man in a tan jacket and dark trousers walked toward the bird. He didn’t make a sound. His boots clicked softly against the wood, a rhythmic pulse that grew louder as he approached the edge of the pier. He reached the pelican and stopped, his boots positioned just inches from the tangled pile of rope and mesh.

A Careful Approach To The Rescue

The man slowly lowered his body, his knees meeting the hard dock. He stayed low to the ground, keeping his movements deliberate and slow. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, sharp blade. The pelican kept its gaze on the man, its large bill slightly open, reflecting the orange light of the dying sun.

He leaned in closer, studying the way the net had coiled around the pelican’s body. He gripped the edge of the netting with one hand, pulling it just enough to create a small gap between the cord and the bird’s feathers. With his other hand, he guided the knife blade downward, slicing through the thick green line. The tension in the fibers snapped instantly as the blade made contact.

Freeing The Trapped Wings

He continued to work his way around the bird, finding each point where the line had cinched tight. He moved the knife in small, precise motions, careful not to graze the delicate skin beneath the feathers. The pelican stretched its wings out fully, the span of its flight feathers catching the breeze as the restrictions finally fell away.

The bird adjusted its position, shaking its wings and tucking them back against its sides. The man remained on his knees, his hands resting on his thighs. He looked at the bird, his face relaxed and still. The pelican peered back at him, shifting its head from side to side, no longer tethered to the wooden planks by the weight of the mesh.

The Return To The Water

The man stood up, his joints creaking slightly as he straightened his legs. He stepped back from the dock’s edge, creating space for the creature to move. The pelican stepped toward the water, its webbed feet gripping the wood one last time. It extended its wings fully, beating them against the air to clear the space between the pier and the horizon.

With a single, powerful push, the bird lifted off the wood. It dipped toward the surface of the harbor, its belly skimming the orange reflection of the clouds on the water’s surface. It glided a few feet above the harbor and landed softly in the water, bobbing as it swam away from the dock. The man turned and walked back along the pier, leaving the empty, discarded netting behind on the boards as the sun finished its descent below the distant tree line.
