A Lone Figure Beside The Highway
The dog sits in the dust, her gaze fixed steadily on the line of cars rushing past her on the asphalt. A rusted chain pulls tight from her collar to the base of a gnarled, leafless tree. She lowers her head, pressing her nose into the dirt, before curling her body into a small, tight circle against the exposed roots.
The dry wind kicks up clouds of silt, coating her fur in a layer of pale grey. Every few seconds, her ears twitch as the rumble of heavy tires vibrates through the ground beneath her paws. She doesn’t bark at the passing traffic. She simply rests her chin on the gravel and waits.
An empty metal bowl sits near her front feet. It is dry, coated in a fine layer of road dust that has collected over time. The dog’s body is thin, her ribs visible beneath the coat of tan and white fur. She stays tethered in the narrow strip of earth between the wild brush and the speeding cars.
The Approach And The Cut
A pickup truck slows down, its tires crunching onto the soft shoulder of the road. A man steps out of the driver’s side door, his boots hitting the hard, sun-baked soil. He walks toward the tree, his movements deliberate and slow. The dog watches him, her head lifting just an inch off the ground as he draws near.
The man kneels in the dirt, keeping his posture low and calm. He reaches into his hand and grips the heavy metal cutters. The metal jaws click open. He positions them around the thick link of the chain near the tree’s trunk. The man leans his weight into the handles. With a sharp, sudden snap, the metal gives way.
The chain falls loose, clattering against the dry earth. The man drops the cutters and reaches out a hand to touch the dog’s flank. She stands up, her tail giving a small, hesitant wag. He runs his palm down her back, and she leans into his touch, her body relaxing for the first time as the tension of the tether disappears.
A New Beginning At Home
The setting shifts to a quiet, grassy yard beside a wooden cabin. The dog trots across the manicured green lawn, her movement fluid and quick. She approaches the man, who is sitting on the bottom step of a wooden porch. She stops just inches from him, looking up at his face.
The man gestures toward a stainless steel bowl placed on the wooden decking. The dog dips her head into the bowl, the sound of her drinking breaking the stillness of the yard. She pulls back, then nudges the bowl again, her focus entirely on the water. The man remains still, watching her, his hand resting on the porch step as the afternoon sun casts long shadows across the grass.
