A Small Goat Falls Into The Deep Dirt Pit
The small white and brown kid slips and slides down the vertical walls of the dry, dusty pit. Its tiny legs scramble against the loose dirt, kicking up small plumes of dust that dance in the afternoon sunlight.
Above the pit, a larger brown goat paces the perimeter. Its head dips low, its ears twitching as it watches the kid struggle against the steep, unforgiving incline of the earth.
A truck approaches from the distance, tires crunching over the gravel road. The vehicle slows to a halt right next to the edge of the pit, kicking up a cloud of silt that settles over the scene.
The Driver Steps Out To Assess The Situation
The driver’s door swings open, and a man in a tan jacket and baseball cap steps out onto the dirt path. He stops at the edge of the hole and looks down at the young goat.
The man scans the steep angle of the pit walls, his brow furrowed as he gauges the distance to the bottom. He checks the perimeter of the dirt hole one last time before making his move.
He sits on the edge of the opening and eases his body down into the pit, his boots sinking into the soft earth. The man lowers himself until he is kneeling in the base of the dirt cavity, the walls rising far above his head.
A Gentle Rescue From Below
The young goat stands still as the man reaches out toward it. He moves slowly, keeping his palms open and his movements steady as he closes the distance between them.
He leans forward, wrapping his arms around the small, wiry frame of the kid. The man pulls the animal tight against his chest, tucking the goat’s head under his chin to keep it secure.
He shifts his weight, digging his boots into the dirt to find purchase against the slope. With the goat held firmly in his grip, he pushes himself up, his muscles straining against the weight as he climbs toward the daylight.
Back On Solid Ground
The man crests the edge of the pit and sets the young goat back down on the grass. The kid stands on its own four hooves again, its coat dusted with the dry soil from the bottom of the hole.
The larger goat approaches immediately, its nose touching the younger goat’s head. The pair stands together in the tall green grass, pressing their foreheads against each other while the man walks back toward the truck, his task complete.
