The Mother Duck Stays Her Ground
A mother duck paces back and forth on the edge of a highway shoulder, her neck stretched out toward a heavy metal storm drain cover. She flaps her wings repeatedly, emitting sharp, rhythmic calls that cut through the steady hum of passing traffic. Below the grate, several tiny, yellow-tinted ducklings scurry in the dark, restricted space of the concrete basin.
She turns her head sharply to watch the cars zip by just feet away. Despite the wind and noise created by the passing vehicles, she does not retreat to the grassy verge. She keeps her feet planted firmly on the metal frame of the drain. She looks down into the darkness, then turns back to the road, her beak open as she continues to call out into the busy highway.
An Intervention on the Shoulder
Most vehicles maintain their speed, their tires vibrating against the asphalt as they pass the scene. The duck remains locked in her position, turning in tight circles to monitor the oncoming traffic. Then, a dark car slows down and pulls onto the narrow shoulder, coming to a stop a short distance away.
A man in an orange polo shirt steps out of the driver’s side door. He walks toward the drain, his eyes fixed on the mother duck. She doesn’t fly away as he approaches; instead, she retreats a few steps, watching him intensely. He kneels down on the pavement, positioning himself directly beside the grate. He reaches out a hand toward the duck, then turns his attention to the heavy iron cover.
The Careful Rescue
The man grips the edge of the iron grate, his knuckles white with the effort of lifting the heavy metal frame. He pulls it upward, setting the grid aside on the concrete to expose the deep opening. He reaches his hands down into the basin, his movements slow and deliberate. One by one, he gathers the small, fluffy ducklings from the bottom of the drain.
He lifts them carefully, cupping them in his palms as he rises from his crouched position. He gently lowers the small birds onto the ground in front of the mother. She walks toward him, her head bobbing, as he sets the last of the group down on the asphalt. He reaches into a bag and tosses a handful of corn seeds onto the road surface near the group.
The Return to the Grass
The mother duck immediately lowers her head to peck at the scattered grain, and the ducklings follow her lead, moving in a tight cluster around her feet. The man remains on his knees for a moment, watching them eat, before he stands up and turns back toward his car. The mother duck shifts her position, tucking her wings against her sides as she moves toward the side of the road.
The ducklings stay close to her tail, their small webbed feet pattering against the pavement as they follow her off the road. The man walks to his vehicle, opening the driver’s side door to settle back into his seat. As his car begins to roll forward along the shoulder, the mother duck leads her brood away from the asphalt and toward the tall grass nearby.
