A Sudden Collision
A black sedan’s front tire clips the side of a goose as she waddles across the pavement. The impact sends her to the ground with a thud, leaving her splayed out on the asphalt. Her tiny, yellow goslings immediately gather around her. They crowd against her chest, their small bodies pressing into her side while she lays motionless.
The traffic continues to blur past in the background. The goslings huddle closer, their downy feathers rustling as they move in small, frantic circles near the mother’s wing. They press their beaks against her feathers, seemingly checking for movement that isn’t there. The mother goose remains still, her head tucked forward, while the small birds keep watch in the middle of the lane.
An Urgent Intervention
A man sprints from the side of the road, his boots hitting the pavement with heavy, rhythmic thuds. A patrol car with flashing blue lights sits in the distance, its presence adding a sharp contrast to the quiet focus of the approaching man. He slows his pace as he reaches the group, lowering his center of gravity until he is crouched on his heels.
He reaches out with both hands, his palms open and steady. He carefully cups the mother goose’s body, sliding one hand underneath her chest and the other across her back. The goslings scatter slightly, their tiny feet pattering on the road as he lifts their mother. He pulls her gently toward his chest, his gaze fixed on her breathing. He stands up and turns toward a waiting transport crate.
Safe Passage
The man sets the crate down on the ground, guiding the mother goose inside as a woman in a uniform watches nearby. He latches the door, securing the enclosure to keep the family contained. Once the mother is settled, the goslings move toward the wire mesh, their heads bobbing in unison as they look toward the crate. The man remains kneeling, his hands moving with measured precision to ensure the space is secure for the transit.
He lifts the crate and carries it to a lush, green field near a body of water. He unlatches the door, and the mother goose pushes her way out, stretching her wings wide until they touch the grass. She takes a few steady steps forward, her neck held high. The goslings waddle out behind her, their thin legs moving quickly across the grass. They follow the mother toward the edge of the water, a golden sunset casting long shadows across the field as they leave the crate behind.
The mother goose walks toward the water with her neck arched, the goslings trailing in a tight, orderly line behind her. She reaches the tall, green grass at the edge of the pond. She continues forward, her webbed feet disappearing into the tall blades as the goslings follow close to her side. The final shot captures the group moving as one, their forms becoming smaller as they reach the bank and step into the tall, swaying reeds near the water’s edge.
