A Sudden Discovery By The Shore
A golden retriever paws at the wet sand, his nose twitching as he catches a scent in the surf. He plunges into the shallow waves, his golden fur darkening as it soaks up the salt water. His teeth grip a tangled, thick mesh net partially submerged in the tide.
The dog pulls hard against the current. Dragging the heavy, brine-soaked bundle toward the dry sand, he drops his burden at his owner’s feet. Inside the web of green twine lies a large, stark white snowy owl, its wings pinned tightly to its sides by the nylon ropes.
The Delicate Process Of Unbinding
The man drops to his knees on the damp sand, his focus narrowing entirely on the owl. He reaches into a bag slung over his shoulder and pulls out a pair of silver scissors. With his left hand, he gently holds the bird’s wing flat against the ground.
The metal blades snip through the thick, knotted mesh with a rhythmic click. He moves cautiously, pulling the taut fibers away from the bird’s feathers to ensure the skin underneath remains untouched. He works his way around the bird’s chest, carefully loosening the constraint until the owl can shift its weight for the first time.
The dog stands just a few inches away, his tail moving slowly back and forth in the breeze. He watches the man’s hands as he cleans a small red spot on the owl’s side. The man applies a strip of tan medical tape to the area, smoothing it down with his thumb.
A Transformation In The Kitchen
The man snips the final tether, pulling a long piece of netting away from the owl’s feet. He stands up, lifting the bird securely against his chest, and carries it off the beach. The dog follows closely behind, trotting at his owner’s heel as they head toward a warm, wooden-walled cabin.
Inside the kitchen, the bird now rests on a piece of cardboard on the floor. Pieces of raw meat are scattered nearby, and the bird pecks at the food, its head bobbing. The man strokes the owl’s back with a rhythmic motion, his fingers tracing the soft, patterned feathers.
The owl hops across the floor, its wings fully extended and free of the netting. It moves toward the dog, who is lying on a green rug near the stove. The bird flutters its wings, expanding them to their full span, and stands tall over the golden retriever as the dog rests his head on his front paws.
