A Dangerous Roadside Encounter
The mother deer stands on the cracked asphalt, a thick, heavy black rubber tire cinched tightly around her neck. Her fawn lies collapsed on the yellow center line, legs splayed against the gray road surface.
Cars continue to zip past the pair in both directions, the wind from the vehicles causing the mother’s ears to twitch and swivel toward the noise. She shifts her weight, her head held awkwardly by the weight of the tire.
A woman steps out of a dark sedan parked along the grassy shoulder. She approaches the mother deer slowly, her long patterned dress flowing around her ankles as she moves across the pavement.
The mother deer shifts her stance, looking at the woman while the fawn remains pressed against the heat-radiating road. The woman reaches out, her hand hovering briefly near the mother’s shoulder to gauge the animal’s reaction.
A Gentle Interaction
The woman kneels on the rough asphalt, bringing her eye level down to the deer. She reaches toward the fawn, her fingers moving rhythmically along its back to keep it calm while the mother stands guard.
The mother deer lets out a high-pitched, strained sound, her jaw opening wide as the woman kneels close. The woman reaches for a water bottle and tilts it gently toward the mother’s mouth, allowing the deer to take a drink.
She then turns her attention to the fawn, offering it a sip from the bottle as well. The mother presses her nose toward the fawn’s head, and the woman continues to stroke their fur with deliberate, slow motions.
The woman pulls a pair of heavy-duty bolt cutters from nearby. She stands up and positions the blades against the thick rubber of the tire. The metal groans as she begins to squeeze the handles together, applying steady pressure.
The Final Liberation
The blades bite deep into the dense rubber, and the woman puts her full weight into the tool. With a sharp snap, the tire splits open, and the heavy ring falls away from the deer’s neck, hitting the road with a dull thud.
The mother deer tosses her head, no longer encumbered by the stiff barrier that had forced her to hold her neck in a fixed position. The woman retreats a few steps, giving the animals room to move away from the traffic.
The mother deer and the fawn are now standing together on the side of the road. The woman pours water into a metal basin, and both deer lean down to lap the liquid from the rim.
The mother deer pauses to look at the woman, her head bobbing slightly. The fawn stands close to its mother, both of them dipping their heads together into the basin as the sun reflects off the water’s surface.
