Stray Duckling Found On Roadside Returns To Safety In Garden

A Lone Traveler on the Edge

A tiny yellow duckling stood on the gravel shoulder, its soft down ruffled by the wake of speeding cars. To its left, the gray pavement blurred with the rhythmic thump of tires passing just inches away. To its right, a drainage grate sat open, a dark gap in the concrete that the small bird seemed to regard with uncertainty.

Two crows perched nearby, their black feathers stark against the pale evening light. They took short, tentative hops toward the duckling, tilting their heads as the yellow bird shifted its weight from foot to foot. The duckling remained still, caught between the mechanical roar of the road and the curious eyes of the birds observing it.

An Unexpected Arrival

The sound of heavy tires slowed as a vehicle pulled onto the shoulder. A woman stepped out, her movements deliberate and focused. She wore a heavy brown canvas jacket and rubber boots, her silhouette casting a long shadow over the gravel as she walked toward the edge of the road.

The woman crouched down, bringing herself level with the duckling. The two crows, sensing her presence, stretched their wings and lifted into the air, circling away as she neared the drainage area. The duckling tracked their movement briefly before focusing entirely on the woman’s hands, which were held out, palms open and low to the ground.

A Gentle Lift to Safety

She moved with slow, steady grace, closing the distance between herself and the small creature. Her fingers moved toward the duckling, not grasping, but offering a soft surface. When she finally cupped her hands beneath its small, warm body, the duckling settled into the hollow of her palms.

She stood up, holding the bird close to her chest. She tucked her arms inward, cradling it against the fabric of her coat to shield it from the wind. With the duckling tucked securely against her, she walked back toward the safety of the green, fenced-in property line.

Finding a New Reflection

The scenery shifted from the sharp, gray grit of the roadside to the soft, vibrant green of a residential lawn. The woman knelt again, placing the duckling gently onto the manicured grass near a stone birdbath. She remained in a squatting position, her knees pressed into the soil, watching as the bird took its first steps on the new terrain.

The duckling wobbled, its feet pattering on the grass. It moved toward the stone bowl, stretched its neck toward the water, and caught the sight of its own reflection in the shallow pool. It dipped its beak into the water, sending tiny ripples across the surface, as the woman remained kneeling, her hands resting on her thighs, watching the bird explore its new surroundings.
