Careful Hands Free A Trapped Duck Beside The Roadside

A Tangled Struggle

A duck’s wing is caught firmly in the mesh of a wire fence, pinning her body against the wooden posts. She beats her free wing repeatedly, the sound of feathers hitting wire echoing against the quiet road. A line of downy, yellow-and-brown ducklings huddle motionless at her feet, watching as she pulls against the restriction.

A black truck pulls onto the gravel shoulder and comes to a complete halt just a few feet away. The driver’s side door swings open, and a man wearing a baseball cap steps out. He keeps his gaze fixed on the trapped bird, his steps measured and slow as he approaches the fence line.

The Gentle Approach

The man stops inches from the bird, kneeling down to get a better look at the wire. He leans in, his face inches from the duck, and he reaches out with both hands. He doesn’t make sudden movements; he lets his fingers rest on the mesh, testing the tension of the wire against her wing.

He shifts his grip, isolating the specific loop of wire that has snagged the bird’s flight feathers. His movements are slow and deliberate, his calloused thumbs working the metal mesh. He pulls at the twisted wire, his knuckles white as he carefully manipulates the metal to widen the gap.

The duck stops thrashing and presses her body against the fence, waiting. The man speaks low, his head tilted downward as he focuses entirely on the intersection of feather and steel. He finds the knot in the netting, threading the material away from her wing one loop at a time.

With a final, steady pull, the mesh slides away from the bird’s limb. The man holds the netting open, giving her the space to pull herself free. She steps away from the fence and immediately settles onto the gravel beside her brood. The man remains on his knees for a moment, checking her wing as she shifts her weight.

A Return to the Water

He stands up, walks back to the bed of his truck, and lifts a metal tray filled with grain. He carries it back, placing the food directly in front of the duck family. The ducklings immediately scramble toward the tray, their beaks tapping rhythmically against the metal as they eat.

He stands over them, watching as they finish their meal. Once they are full, he gently guides them away from the road, moving toward the grassy edge of the nearby pond. He walks behind them, keeping a steady pace as they waddle toward the water’s edge.

The mother duck reaches the shoreline and enters the water without a sound. The ducklings follow, trailing behind her in a tight, bobbing line. They swim into the open water, leaving behind only the ripples they created as they move toward the middle of the lake.
