Bystander Clears Python From Two Koalas Using Fire Extinguisher

A Sudden Struggle On The Tarmac

A large python coils its muscular body tight around an adult koala, its head reared back with jaws wide as it presses into the thick fur. A smaller, younger koala clings desperately to the adult’s back, digging its claws into the fur while letting out a high-pitched, distressed cry. They remain locked on the asphalt, the snake’s grip tightening around the adult’s midsection. The scale of the snake spans the width of the road, its patterned skin contrasting sharply against the gray surface. As a white vehicle approaches, it slows down, swerving slightly to navigate around the unfolding scene.

A Swift Intervention

A man in a navy blue shirt and red cap steps out of the car, carrying a bright red fire extinguisher. He walks toward the group, his eyes locked on the snake’s head as it hisses. He pulls the safety pin with one hand and shifts his weight to steady his stance. With a firm press of the lever, a dense, white plume of chemical spray erupts from the nozzle. The mist engulfs the snake’s head and the surrounding area, blanketing the ground in a fine, powdery dust.

The Gentle Aftermath

The snake loosens its hold, sliding away from the koalas and retreating toward the edge of the scrubby grass. The man pauses, waiting for the air to clear before kneeling down on the hot pavement. He reaches out, using his bare hands to brush the thick, white powder from the adult koala’s fur. He strokes the animal’s back, moving slowly to ensure it has recovered from the intensity of the struggle. The smaller koala remains nearby, watching as the man checks their condition.

The man then produces a large metal bowl filled with fresh water. He sets it on the ground and guides the koalas toward it, keeping his hand resting gently on the adult’s head. The animals lean forward, pressing their noses to the surface to drink, their breathing gradually slowing. He stands up and offers them a bundle of fresh, green eucalyptus leaves, holding the branches out for them to grasp. They turn their attention to the food, pulling the leaves toward their mouths with small, careful movements of their paws.

Restored To The Trees

The man keeps watch, ensuring they are no longer in danger from the traffic or the reptile that has vanished into the undergrowth. Finally, he steps back to allow them to make their way toward the safety of the trees lining the road. The adult climbs up the trunk of a tall gum tree, the young one following close behind, clinging to its parent’s back. The man watches them ascend into the branches until they reach the high canopy. He stands at the base of the trunk, looking up, while the koalas settle into a fork in the tree, safe and high above the ground.
