A Cold Reception
An older man wearing a weathered jacket runs his hand across the sleek black hood of a luxury sports car. A salesman in a sharp, dark suit steps forward, his hands held up as if to block the man from touching the vehicle. The salesman points toward the door and insists that the man should look for a car at a used lot two blocks away.
He speaks about the price of the car being equal to the man’s home and retirement savings. The man in the jacket doesn’t move. He listens, his face mostly still, while the salesman continues to lecture him about his inability to afford the inventory.
The Power of a Name
The salesman pulls out a white piece of paper and hands it to the man in the jacket. The man takes it, looking down at the text printed on the card. He then asks the salesman to read what is written on it again. He wants the salesman to confirm where exactly he should be shopping.
The man in the jacket begins to explain that he built the entire dealership himself in 1981. He describes how he personally walks through every single showroom floor every quarter to inspect the operation. The salesman’s posture shifts as the realization settles in.
A Sudden Shift in Authority
The man in the jacket pulls out his phone and makes a brief call. He addresses the person on the other end, identified as Sandra, and tells her to send security to the showroom floor. He gives a firm instruction to have his own employee’s final payroll check cut immediately that evening.
He snaps the phone shut and taps it against his palm. The salesman stands silent, his eyes fixed on the man who owns the building. Two security guards enter the frame, moving directly to the salesman’s side. They reach out and place their hands on his arms to guide him away from the display.
The Final Handover
As the salesman is escorted toward the exit, the older man remains standing by the car. He turns his attention to a bright red vehicle nearby. He reaches out and rests his hand firmly on the hood of the red car.
He states that he will have this particular car delivered to his house the following morning. The scene ends as the man stands beside the polished red paint, his hand still resting on the car while the showroom lights reflect off the glass overhead.
