Duck Trapped In Fishing Net Freed On Roadside By Man

An Unexpected Discovery On The Road

A mother duck lies motionless on the side of a narrow road, her wings splayed against the asphalt. A tangle of dark, synthetic fishing net knots tightly around her body and feet, anchoring her to the ground. Directly behind her, seven small ducklings stand in a tight, nervous cluster.

They shuffle in place, their yellow and brown downy feathers ruffling in the wind. The ducklings do not wander toward the water. Instead, they press their small bodies as close to the trapped parent as possible, chirping incessantly.

A silver car approaches from the distance, its tires humming against the pavement. The driver slows as the vehicle reaches the scene, coming to a complete stop just a few feet away from the group.

The Careful Intervention

The driver steps out, keeping his eyes on the trapped bird and the circling ducklings. He walks toward them with his hands held slightly out, taking measured, slow steps to avoid startling the young ones.

He reaches the mother duck and lowers his frame to the ground, his knees touching the edge of the road. He pulls a pair of blue scissors from his pocket. The mother duck remains still, her head resting on the grit of the road surface.

He begins to work on the mesh. His fingers find the thickest strands of the net that are cinched around the duck’s wings. He snips carefully, watching the blade closely to ensure he does not nick the bird’s feathers or skin.

Freeing The Mother

The man keeps his movements rhythmic and steady. He moves to the feet, where the mesh is tangled around the webbing. He pauses, adjusting his grip on the scissors as he pulls the netting away from the delicate flesh.

The mother duck blinks, her eyes focusing on the movement of the metal blades. The man continues to methodically cut through the final layers of the trap. He clears the last of the synthetic rope from beneath the duck’s chest.

He sets the scissors aside and reaches for a clear plastic water bottle. He unscrews the cap and tips the bottle, letting a steady stream of water cascade over the duck’s head and neck to clear away the road dust.

Back To The Safety Of The Shore

The man then reaches into a bag and tosses small bits of food onto the pavement. The mother duck stands up, shaking her feathers until they settle back into place. She immediately begins to peck at the pieces of food.

The seven ducklings dart forward, surrounding her as she moves toward the grassy verge. The mother waddles down the incline, away from the hard road surface and toward the edge of the dark, rippling lake.

The ducklings follow in a single, tight line behind her. She reaches the tall green grass at the water’s edge, disappearing into the vegetation while the ducklings trail closely behind, their heads bobbing in unison as they move toward the lake surface.
