Helping A Snowy Owl Return To Its Forest Home

A Tangled Encounter on the Roadside

The adult snowy owl hangs suspended, its large white wings splayed against the coarse nylon netting tangled in the barbed wire fence. Its head swivels sharply toward the ground, where a young owlet sits perched on the dry, sparse grass near the asphalt.

The adult bird’s feathers rustle as it beats its wings, but the netting holds firm. The owlet, covered in soft, gray-white down, looks up, its beak parted wide as it emits a high-pitched, insistent sound. The adult responds with a rhythmic, guttural clicking, its golden eyes fixed on the small creature below.

The Manual Intervention

A black pickup truck slows to a halt on the shoulder of the road. A man in a red plaid shirt and blue jeans steps out of the driver’s side door, his boots crunching on the gravel.

He approaches the fence line slowly, his gaze moving between the trapped owl and the young one waiting at the base of the post. The adult owl stops struggling and fixes its stare on the man, its wings held out wide as if braced for contact.

The man reaches out with gloved hands. He reaches into the tangled mesh, his fingers working methodically around the owl’s primary feathers. He carefully shifts the weight of the bird, his movements slow and deliberate to avoid snagging the delicate barbs of the netting.

He continues to adjust the bird’s position, his breath visible in the cool air. The owl remains still, its talons gripping the wire as the man disentangles the final strands of netting from its wing. With a quick, smooth motion, he frees the bird’s limb, supporting its weight as he lowers it to the ground.

Returning to the Nest

Once the adult owl is released, it steps onto the earth beside the young owlet. The man reaches into his truck and pulls out a plastic water bottle. He kneels on the roadside, tilting the water toward the birds, ensuring they have a moment to hydrate before moving on.

He then stands, reaches down, and lifts the large bird with both arms. The owl stays tucked against his chest, its head swiveling to observe the surroundings. He walks away from the road, stepping over the threshold into the thick, evergreen forest that borders the asphalt.

He carefully places the adult owl down into a large, sturdy nest made of pine needles and twigs located high in the woods. The smaller owlet waits nearby. He uses his hand to smooth the feathers on the adult’s head, his fingers moving gently across the crown.

The two owls huddle together in the soft nesting material. The man stands back as the adult bird settles, tucking its wing inward to cover the young one.
