A Sudden Struggle on the Pavement
A monitor lizard clamps its powerful jaws onto the neck of a spotted fawn, dragging the young deer toward the edge of the asphalt. The deer, immobilized and vulnerable, lets out high-pitched vocalizations as its head is pulled back against the ground.
Traffic continues to flow past the pair, with vehicles slowing down but keeping their distance. The fawn lies still, its eyes wide and body tense as the lizard maintains its grip, its long tail coiled across the deer’s shoulder.
The Unexpected Arrival
A man pulls his vehicle over to the side of the road and steps out, walking toward the animals with a red fire extinguisher in his hands. He approaches the pair, his movements calculated and deliberate as he positions himself just a few feet away from the struggle.
He pulls the safety pin from the canister and releases a focused blast of white chemical powder directly at the lizard’s head. The force of the discharge forces the reptile to shift its grip, though it remains latched onto the fawn’s neck for a moment longer.
Dispersing the Hold
The man triggers the extinguisher again, this time aiming the cloud closer to the point of contact between the two animals. The dense white mist covers the ground, obscuring the lizard as the man keeps the pressure on, forcing the predator to eventually release its hold and scuttle away from the deer.
Once the lizard has retreated toward the brush, the man sets the fire extinguisher down on the road. He moves closer to the fawn, which is still lying on the grass, and begins to check the area around its neck.
A Moment of Recovery
The man pulls out a white cloth and carefully wipes the residual white powder from the fawn’s neck and chin. His hands move in soft, rhythmic motions across the animal’s fur, clearing away the debris from the struggle.
He then reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small handful of food, offering it to the fawn on the flat of his palm. The deer tilts its head, nibbling at the offering as the man continues to pat its side, providing a moment of calm after the intense encounter.
The man remains knelt beside the animal, holding the food steady while the fawn continues to eat from his hand. His fingers remain against the fawn’s neck, feeling for the steadiness of its breathing as the sun filters through the trees overhead.
