A Roadside Rescue for a Mother Parrot and Her Chicks

A Discovery on the Pavement

A green parrot with a vibrant red patch on its head flattens its body against the grey asphalt. The bird is splayed out, wings spread wide, while two tiny, featherless chicks huddle close to its side. Their beaks are held wide open, pointing toward the sky, shivering against the rough, gravelly texture of the roadside.

Cars zip past at high speeds, sending clouds of dust swirling around the fragile group. Every time a vehicle approaches, the parrot flinches and turns its head toward the roar of the engines, but it refuses to move away from its babies.

The Human Intervention

A man pulls over and steps toward the birds. He does not rush or make sudden movements. He kneels on the asphalt, bringing his face level with the group. He reaches out a hand, hovering it just above the chicks to shield them from the wind of the passing traffic.

The man pulls a small plastic spray bottle from his pocket. He adjusts the nozzle and carefully mists the mother parrot, watching the droplets land on her ruffled green feathers. She remains still, tracking his hand with a sharp, dark eye, her breathing visible in the slight rise and fall of her chest.

He shifts his position to create a more stable barrier between the birds and the road. He uses his fingers to gently brush away a stray leaf near the mother’s wing. He pulls a small tissue from his pocket, dampens it, and dabs at a dark mark on the bird’s plumage, clearing away the debris with slow, measured strokes.

A Safe Transition

The man keeps one hand over the chicks to keep them calm, his palm resting lightly on their heads. With his other hand, he slides his fingers beneath the mother parrot’s body. He lifts her slowly, carefully supporting her weight as she adjusts her grip on his palm.

He gathers the chicks, cupping them in the same hand as the mother. The tiny birds press their naked bodies against the warmth of his skin. He stands up and turns away from the dangerous, dusty edge of the road, walking toward the line of pine trees bordering the asphalt.

He reaches a sturdy branch with an existing nest. He places the mother parrot inside, her talons finding purchase in the twigs. He follows by placing the two chicks under her body, watching as they tuck themselves beneath her wings. The man uses his index finger to gently stroke the top of the mother bird’s head, moving back and forth in short, rhythmic motions while she finally settles into the safety of the nest.
