A Tangled Struggle By The Roadside
The peacock’s long, iridescent tail feathers are pressed hard against the vertical mesh of the fishing net. One of its legs is clearly snagged, pulling the bird’s body weight toward the fence line. The bird keeps its head turned, watching the people gathered on the nearby asphalt path.
A group of onlookers stands in a line, pointing at the trapped animal. A man in a blue shirt steps forward, his hands gesturing toward the mesh. He keeps his voice steady, his eyes darting between the bird and the tangled net.
A car pulls up alongside the group on the road. The driver pauses, his window rolled down, assessing the situation. The bird remains still, its neck feathers shimmering in the filtered sunlight that cuts through the trees.
Careful Hands Approach The Fence
The man in the beige shirt steps toward the fence line, his movements slow and deliberate. He approaches the side of the bird, extending his hands to reach the area where the netting catches the feathers. The peacock shifts, its wings flapping briefly against the wire, creating a rhythmic sound of dry quills against plastic mesh.
The man keeps his fingers precise, pinching the edges of the netting. He does not pull; he manipulates the weave to find the loop caught around the peacock’s leg. Every time the bird flutters, the man pauses, keeping his hands just inches away from the sharp beak.
The group behind him watches in silence, their postures rigid. One woman holds her hands near her chest, her fingers interlaced. The man leans in closer, his head tilted to see the specific knot of plastic threads holding the tail feathers tight.
The Moment Of Release
He reaches for a specific section of the black netting near the bird’s hip. With a quick, practiced motion, he creates enough slack for the bird to pull its leg free. The peacock lunges forward, its large wings opening wide to regain balance.
The bird steps clear of the mesh, landing on the dirt path. It immediately turns, facing the man who released it. The people behind the fence begin to clap, their hands moving in slow, rhythmic patterns.
The peacock arches its back. The feathers on its lower half begin to rise, expanding into a massive, circular fan of gold, green, and deep blue circles. The bird pivots slowly, rotating the entire display in front of the group on the road.
The sunlight hits the iridescent patterns on the expanded tail, making the colors shift. The bird stands tall on the pavement, its neck held high, turning its head to look directly at the small crowd. As the display settles, the bird begins to walk away, its tail feathers trailing on the ground as it moves toward the shade of the trees.
