The Unwelcome Table
An older man stands near the center of the dining room, clutching his phone in his palm. He wears a dark knit sweater and glasses, his posture upright and steady.
A restaurant manager in a sharp black suit approaches him. She moves quickly, her eyes darting across the room, and stops inches from the man. She gestures with her tablet toward the back of the establishment.
People who look like him usually sit in the back, she says, her fingers pointing toward the shadows near the rear exit. She does not look at the empty table right in front of them.
The Escalating Demand
The man keeps his gaze fixed on her. He tells her he came here peacefully, but she cuts him off with a quick wave of her hand. Her face tightens and her jaw sets.
She tells him to stop the performance. She calls the restaurant high-class and signals for him to find a diner where he might fit in better.
The man stares, unmoving. He keeps his voice low and warns her not to be so certain about her assumptions.
The Arrival of Security
The manager pulls out her device and taps the screen. She threatens to call security and remove him from the premises entirely.
The man nods slowly, encouraging her to proceed with the call. Moments later, a security officer in a black uniform walks into the frame, his shoulders squared and his hand raised.
He reaches the man and points a finger toward the front door, his voice booming across the quiet dining room. He commands the man to put his phone away and leave the property immediately.
The Final Reveal
The manager stands beside the guard, a light smile touching her lips. The man holds up his smartphone and swipes the screen with his thumb.
He turns the device toward the pair, his expression neutral. The manager’s eyes widen. Her mouth falls open, and her hand creeps up to cover her lips. The security officer freezes, his hand dropping to his side.
The man holds up a lanyard displaying a badge that reads CEO. He stares directly at the manager, pointing toward the exit.
He tells them he built the restaurant from the ground up. He turns his head and directs both the manager and the security officer toward the door. They look at the floor, stepping away as he remains in the center of the room.
