A Meal In The Booth
The waiter steps toward the booth with a plate holding a sandwich and side dishes. She leans down to place the food in front of the man sitting in the corner seat. He wears a ragged, heavy cloak that pools around his legs on the vinyl cushion. His hands reach out to steady the plate as she pulls her tray back.
A man in a sharp black suit looms over the table. He points a finger toward the door, his posture rigid and his movements quick. He shifts his weight from one foot to the other, his gaze snapping between the seated man and the employee. The woman keeps her hands clasped in front of her apron as she faces him.
She speaks in a low, steady tone, her eyes locking onto his. The man in the suit shakes his head and paces back and forth in the narrow aisle. He gestures toward the other patrons eating in the background. His tie sits straight against his crisp white shirt, a stark contrast to the worn-out fabric covering the diner in the booth.
A Sudden Confrontation
The man in the suit steps closer, his voice raised. He continues to point his finger, tapping the air as he punctuates his demands. The woman stands her ground, her shoulders pulled back, despite the way the man circles the table. She explains her actions, gesturing with open palms toward the plate of food.
The man in the suit stops pacing and leans over the table. He speaks directly to the man in the cloak, then turns back to the woman. He makes a sharp cutting motion with his hand toward the entrance. He pulls a folded piece of paper from his pocket, waving it as he dictates the terms of the interaction.
The woman listens, her jaw set, while she watches him move. She looks down at the table for a split second before returning her focus to the man in the suit. The diners sitting at nearby tables remain still, their meals partially finished as they observe the exchange from their chairs.
The Tables Turn
The man in the suit stands upright, his hands tucked firmly into his coat pockets. He looks down at the man in the booth, who has slowly started to reach for his own clothing. The man in the suit continues to talk, his brow furrowed as he waits for the woman to pack her things and leave the dining area.
The man in the cloak stands up. He reaches for the edges of his heavy, tattered garment. With a slow, deliberate movement, he pulls the coat open to reveal a dark, pressed button-down shirt underneath. He stands tall, his posture shifting from a hunched lean to a firm, balanced stance. He brushes his shoulders and looks the man in the suit directly in the eye.
The man in the suit takes a half-step back, his chin dropping toward his chest. His hands slide out of his pockets and fall to his sides. The woman remains standing behind the booth, her gaze shifting between the two men as the silence grows in the dining room. The man in the cloak adjusts his shirt cuffs and takes a single step forward, narrowing the distance between himself and the man who moments ago held all the power.
