A Sudden Discovery On The Roadside
A car maneuvers slowly along a narrow, tree-lined gravel path, its tires crunching against the loose stones. The driver glances down at the ground and hits the brakes, bringing the vehicle to a complete stop.
Three small, white birds are huddled on the roadside. One of them lies flat against the gravel, its body splayed out as if it has lost the strength to stand upright. The other two birds stand nearby, their beaks wide open in a rhythmic, desperate call.
The driver steps out of the car, his movements slow and deliberate. He approaches the birds without rushing. He carries a small plastic water bottle in his hand, his eyes fixed on the bird lying on the ground.
Careful Steps Toward Help
He kneels down on the gravel, bringing himself to the level of the small creatures. He unscrews the cap of the water bottle and begins to pour, letting a thin stream of water pool near the beak of the bird that is lying down.
The movement of the water catches the attention of the other birds, who shift their weight closer. The man watches them closely, his hands steady as he adjusts his position to better reach the one struggling to lift its head.
He retrieves a dropper from his kit. He carefully holds the head of the small bird between his thumb and index finger, tilting it back ever so slightly. With the other hand, he squeezes the dropper, allowing a single drop of liquid to fall directly into the open, yellow-rimmed beak.
Nourishment For The Little Ones
The bird accepts the moisture, its eyes blinking slowly as it adjusts to the attention. The man keeps his grip gentle but firm, ensuring the bird does not stumble or pull away while being hydrated.
Once the bird seems to gain a bit of energy, the man opens his palm. He pours a small handful of seeds onto the ground, creating a small pile on the dusty road surface. He shifts back, giving them space to approach the food.
The three birds step toward the pile, their heads bobbing as they begin to peck at the seeds. They move with more coordination now, their wings tucking tightly against their bodies as they concentrate on eating. The man stays kneeling, watching them as they find their strength, the car idling quietly in the background, a silent sentinel near the trees.
The birds finish the last of the scattered seeds, pecking at the final remnants on the gravel. They hop together, their movements synchronized and active, before they eventually move away from the spot where they had been lying just moments before.
