The Edge Of The Asphalt
The white car brushed past the gravel, sending a puff of dust over the peacock’s iridescent blue neck. The bird didn’t flinch, even as the wind from the passing vehicle ruffled the long, green feathers trailing behind him on the dirt. He stood on the very edge of the pavement, his head tilted toward the dense forest while three small, brown chicks huddled against his legs.
A black pickup truck roared by a few seconds later, its massive tires humming against the yellow line just feet away from the vulnerable chicks. The peacock let out a sharp, high-pitched cry, his beak opening wide as he stared into the trees. He remained anchored to the spot, refusing to move his young further into the tall grass or across the hot asphalt.
The sun beat down on the narrow strip of gray rocks where the family sat. The chicks stayed close to the peacock’s feathered underside, their tiny heads darting back and forth as more vehicles sped past. The peacock’s crest stood tall, vibrating slightly with every heavy vibration of the road.
A Strange Tool For Help
A man in a white t-shirt and blue shorts walked down the center of the lane toward the birds. In his right hand, he gripped the metal handle of a heavy red fire extinguisher. He slowed his pace as he reached the gravel shoulder, keeping his eyes fixed on the mother bird’s reaction.
The peacock watched the man approach, his neck extending upward to its full height. He didn’t turn to run toward the safety of the woods, nor did he try to cross the lanes of traffic. He simply stood his ground, shield-like, between the stranger and the three chicks sitting in the dirt.
The man stopped a few feet away, his shadow falling over the small birds. He adjusted his grip on the red canister, pointing the black nozzle toward the ground near the peacock’s feet. He moved with a heavy, deliberate slowness, avoiding any sudden shifts that might startle the family into the path of a passing car.
The Cool Mist
He squeezed the trigger, and a thick, white cloud of vapor billowed out from the extinguisher. The mist didn’t hit the birds directly but settled in a cool layer around the gravel. The peacock stood perfectly still, allowing the white fog to wash over his legs and the chicks huddled beneath him.
As the vapor cleared, the man set the extinguisher down on the edge of the road. He reached into a bag and pulled out a shallow plastic basin, holding it out toward the birds. The peacock’s beak clicked shut, and he watched the man’s hands as they moved closer to the ground.
The man dropped to one knee, his skin pressing against the rough surface of the roadside stones. He placed the bowl of water directly in front of the peacock. He then pulled his hands back slowly, resting them on his thighs while he waited for the bird to respond.
A Display Of Gratitude
The peacock lowered its head, dipping its beak into the water and taking long, rhythmic gulps. The chicks peeked out from behind his legs, watching the man who remained crouched just inches away. After a few moments, the peacock lifted his head, water droplets clinging to the underside of his beak.
Suddenly, the peacock pivoted his body, turning his back toward the man. With a sharp, dry rustling sound, the long train of feathers began to rise. The green and gold plumes fanned out into a massive, shimmering wall of color that towered over the man and the road.
The man looked up, his jaw loosening as he stared at the hundreds of iridescent eyes staring back at him from the feathers. He stayed on his knee, motionless, as the peacock shook his plumage, creating a low, vibrating hum that drowned out the sound of the distant cars. The man watched as the peacock fanned his tail wide, the vibrant green feathers catching the light against the backdrop of the dark forest trees.
