A Struggle on the Roadside
The large constrictor snake winds its heavy, muscular body tightly around the neck and torso of a vibrant peacock. The bird sits motionless on the gravel shoulder of a busy highway, its long, iridescent tail feathers fanned out against the dusty ground. Two small, fluffy chicks peck at the pebbles just feet away, unaware of the peril their parent is facing. Traffic moves past in a steady blur of white and black vehicles.
A man pulls his vehicle over and steps out, clutching a bright red fire extinguisher. He approaches the pair with long strides, his brow furrowed as he assesses the tight grip of the predator. He does not stop until he is standing just a few feet from the struggling pair. The peacock lets out a harsh, sharp call, tilting its head back as the snake continues to constrict.
A Surprising Intervention
The man pulls the safety pin from the canister with a sharp metallic snap. He positions the nozzle toward the dense coils wrapped firmly around the bird’s chest. With a sudden burst of force, a thick cloud of white chemical foam erupts from the nozzle. The foam sprays directly onto the scales of the snake, coating its back and head in a thick, opaque layer.
The snake’s reaction is immediate. As the cold, pressurized particles hit its skin, the creature’s grip loosens. It begins to uncoil, its head retreating from the peacock’s neck. The man keeps the pressure steady, directing the spray in an arc to ensure the snake is forced away from its target. The air fills with white particulate, obscuring the gravel for a few seconds.
The Coils Loosen
The snake slides away across the gravel, recoiling from the stinging foam. It moves rapidly toward the tall green bushes lining the highway, leaving the peacock behind. The bird remains on the ground for a moment, shaking its neck as the white foam settles on its deep blue breast feathers. The man steps forward again, spraying a final burst toward the brush to encourage the predator to keep moving further into the shade.
The threat is gone. The peacock stands up, its movements regaining a sense of rhythm as it shakes its wings and adjusts its ruffled plumage. The man sets the empty extinguisher on the pavement and reaches for a clear plastic container from his car. He kneels down in the gravel, his movements slow and deliberate, placing the container in front of the bird.
The Quiet Aftermath
The bird steps cautiously toward the container as the two small chicks scramble closer, pecking at the ground near the man’s knees. He pours water into the plastic tray, watching as the peacock dips its beak to drink. He pulls a handful of grain or seed from a bag and sprinkles it onto the black asphalt line of the road.
The peacock lowers its head to eat, its long tail feathers shifting slightly with each movement. The man remains on his knees, his hands resting on his thighs. He watches the birds eat, his shoulders dropping and his breathing evening out. The peacock continues to forage for food near the center line while the two chicks huddle close to their parent’s side. The bird pecks at the grains scattered on the road, its bright blue neck catching the midday sun as it eats undisturbed.
