An Urgent Discovery in the Grass
A small Jack Russell terrier nudges a tiny, spotted fawn lying motionless in the tall grass. The dog’s nose brushes the fawn’s ear, then its neck, but the movement is met with a sharp, warning hiss from a large snake coiled tightly around the fawn’s body.
The dog backs away, his tail stiffening. He looks toward the stone farmhouse in the distance, then back at the fawn. The snake’s thick, dark scales are wrapped in multiple loops, pinning the fawn to the earth.
The terrier turns and bolts across the field. He reaches the stone wall of the house and begins scratching frantically at the wooden door. He jumps against the heavy timber, his nails clicking against the grain, whining loudly as he looks back toward the field.
The Human Intervention
A woman opens the door. She watches as the dog darts back toward the pasture, stopping to look over his shoulder. She runs across the uneven grass, her boots kicking up dust and blades of weeds as she follows the terrier to the center of the field.
She reaches the spot and stops abruptly. The sight of the snake locked around the fawn causes her to draw her breath in sharply. She looks around the immediate area and finds a long, sturdy wooden branch lying in the grass.
She approaches the tangled pair with the wood held high. The snake’s head rises, flicking its tongue toward the woman. She lowers the stick firmly against the serpent’s coils. She begins to maneuver the wood, prying at the tight grip the snake has maintained on the fragile animal.
A Careful Rescue
The woman applies pressure to the thickest part of the snake’s body, working the stick underneath the constricting loops. She pushes and lifts, shifting the weight of the reptile away from the fawn’s ribcage. The snake starts to loosen its hold as it senses the disruption of its grip.
She maintains her focus, her arms steady as she unwinds the last remaining coil from the fawn’s leg. The fawn remains still, its eyes wide and blinking. The woman sets the stick aside and reaches down with both hands.
She lifts the fawn carefully from the grass, cradling it against her chest. The dog trots alongside her, his nose inches from the fawn’s coat as they head back toward the house. The tension in the field remains, but the woman walks with steady, rhythmic steps.
A New Beginning in the Kitchen
The woman sits on the floor of her farmhouse kitchen, the fawn standing on its shaky legs before her. A shallow wooden crate sits on the floor, filled with fresh, bright orange carrots and crisp greens. The fawn lowers its head and takes a bite of a carrot.
The dog stands nearby, sniffing at his own bowl of food, his tail wagging slowly back and forth. The woman rests one hand on the fawn’s neck, stroking the soft fur. The light from the window illuminates the kitchen, reflecting off the clean wooden surfaces as the fawn continues to eat from the crate, surrounded by the quiet hum of the house.
