A Warning From The Desert Dust
The golden retriever’s paws pounded against the dry, orange earth as she sprinted toward the approaching safari truck. She didn’t slow down as the vehicle drew closer, instead lunging forward and planting her front feet firmly on the white hood. Her claws scraped against the metal, and she barked upward at the passengers seated in the open-air back of the truck.
The driver hit the brakes, sending a cloud of fine red dust swirling around the tires. The dog didn’t jump down immediately; she stood her ground on the hood, her tail rigid and her eyes fixed on the people inside. The passengers didn’t reach for their phones or cameras to capture the unusual sight. Instead, they sat in a heavy stillness, some bowing their heads and pressing their palms together as if waiting for something they couldn’t see.
Behind the truck, a much smaller golden retriever puppy watched from the side of the trail. The adult dog jumped down and circled back toward the smaller animal, her barks becoming sharper and more frequent. She seemed to be trying to push the puppy away from the base of the towering rock formations that lined the narrow mountain pass.
The Mountain Begins To Move
A low rumble started deep within the canyon walls. Small pebbles began to skitter down the cliffside, bouncing off the larger boulders before hitting the sandy floor. The puppy, confused by the noise and the frantic movements of the older dog, scrambled upward into a crevice in the rocks. Just as the puppy disappeared into the shadows of the stones, the slope gave way.
Massive slabs of orange rock slid downward, colliding with one another and shattering into smaller fragments. The sound was like a series of slamming doors echoing through the valley. A thick veil of dust rose from the ground, obscuring the view of the mountain. The puppy was completely gone, buried somewhere beneath the fresh pile of jagged debris that now blocked the path forward.
The adult dog ran to the edge of the rockfall. She began to dig, her front legs moving in a blur as she threw dirt and small stones backward. She shoved her nose into the gaps between the larger rocks, sniffing deeply and let out a long, mourning sound. The people in the truck watched from a distance, their hands over their mouths as they looked at the massive pile of stone that had just claimed the small animal.
A Light In The Canyon
As the dust began to settle, the sun broke through a gap in the canyon walls in a way that seemed to catch the lingering particles in the air. A massive formation of white clouds shifted directly over the site of the rockslide, taking on a shape that stretched wide across the horizon. The light intensified, casting long shadows across the debris where the mother dog continued her frantic work.
She wedged her shoulders between two heavy stones and pushed. Her back arched and her muscles strained as she forced a gap wide enough for her head to fit through. She disappeared into the darkness of the rock pile for a moment, leaving only her wagging tail visible to the onlookers. When she backed out, she wasn’t alone. She held the scruff of the puppy’s neck gently in her teeth, pulling the smaller dog out from the hollow space beneath the boulders.
The puppy shook its head, sending a spray of dust into the air, and let out a small yip. Its legs were shaky, but it stood upright on the red dirt. The mother dog immediately began to lick the puppy’s face, her tongue moving over its ears and eyes to clear away the grit. The tension that had held the safari passengers in their seats finally broke as they realized the pair was safe.
The group of tourists climbed down from the high seats of the truck. They didn’t stay back; they walked toward the dogs, kneeling in the dirt. One man reached out and stroked the mother dog’s head while she leaned into his touch, her tail thumping against the ground. The puppy hopped between the legs of the travelers, receiving gentle pats from everyone. The group sat together on the dusty trail, laughing and leaning against the very rocks that had nearly caused a tragedy.
