A Sudden Attack Under The Gray Sky
Two figures in dark hoodies sprinted down the center of the asphalt path toward the woman’s back. She was walking alone, a large leather bag slung over her shoulder, unaware of the two men closing the distance behind her.
Before she could turn, the men reached her. One grabbed her arm while the other went for her bag, pulling her off the path and toward the thick trunks of the nearby trees.
The struggle was brief as the men overpowered her. They forced her back against the rough bark of an oak tree, wrapping thick brown rope around her torso and the trunk. A strip of silver duct tape was pressed firmly over her mouth, muffling her cries as the men turned and ran back toward the road with her belongings.
She was left alone in the quiet park, her breath coming in jagged, uneven bursts through her nose. She pulled against the ropes, her fingers clawing at the rough hemp, but the knots held firm against her efforts.
An Unexpected Visitor Arrives
A rustle of dead leaves sounded from behind a nearby bench. A Golden Retriever trotted into the clearing, its tail swinging low as it approached the tree where the woman remained bound. The dog stopped a few feet away, tilting its head as it watched her struggle.
The woman’s eyes widened as she looked at the dog, her head shaking slightly as she tried to make a sound behind the tape. The dog stepped closer, sniffing at the ropes that crossed her waist.
It rose up on its hind legs, placing its front paws on the woman’s thighs. It let out a series of sharp, rhythmic barks that echoed through the empty park corridor.
The dog dropped back to all fours, spinning in a tight circle. It looked back at the woman once more before turning and sprinting back toward the main entrance of the park.
Its paws thudded against the wet pavement as it navigated the winding path. The dog didn’t stop until it reached the iron gates where a police cruiser sat parked along the curb.
The Search For Help
An officer stood by the open driver’s side door, checking a notebook when the dog reached him. The Golden Retriever began barking immediately, jumping toward the officer and then running a few yards back into the park.
The officer looked up, watching the dog’s behavior with a furrowed brow. He took a step toward the dog, and the animal reacted by running further down the path, stopping only to look over its shoulder.
The officer realized the dog wasn’t just wandering. He climbed back into his vehicle and flipped on the emergency lights, the red and blue strobes reflecting off the wet pavement.
The dog ran ahead of the car, keeping its pace steady so the vehicle could follow. They moved through the rows of bare trees, passing empty benches and piles of damp autumn leaves.
As they reached the deeper part of the woods, the dog veered off the path and ran toward the base of the oak tree. It began barking again, more insistently this time, standing directly in front of the bound woman.
A Rescue In The Woods
The cruiser came to a halt and the officer stepped out, his hand moving toward his radio as he saw the woman tied to the tree. He moved quickly, reaching into his pocket for a tool to clear the tape from her face.
He carefully peeled back the silver adhesive, and the woman let out a long, shuddering breath. He worked on the ropes next, loosening the coils that had been pulled tight across her chest and arms.
As the last of the rope fell to the ground, the woman’s legs gave way slightly. The officer held her arm to steady her while she rubbed her wrists where the rope had left red marks.
The Golden Retriever didn’t move from her side, its head resting against her leg. The woman dropped to her knees on the leaf-covered ground, pulling the dog into a tight embrace.
She buried her face in the dog’s golden fur, her shoulders shaking as she let out a quiet sob. The dog stood still, its tail wagging slowly while the officer stood nearby, speaking into his radio to report the incident.
The woman pulled back and cupped the dog’s face in both of her hands, kissing the top of its head. The Golden Retriever responded by licking her cheek, its tongue catching the tears that were still falling as she smiled for the first time since the attack.
