A Helpless Parent on the Asphalt
The green plastic netting bound the owl’s yellow talons tightly against its chest as it lay flat on its back on the hot asphalt. Its large yellow eyes stared straight up at the sky, blinking slowly while its chest rose and fell in quick, shallow breaths. Just inches away in the roadside weeds, three fluffy gray owl chicks stood in a tight line, their beaks parted as they watched the adult’s struggle.
A white SUV kicked up a cloud of dust as it drove past the birds, its tires passing dangerously close to the edge of the pavement. Shortly after, a black SUV slowed to a crawl and pulled over onto the dusty shoulder of the mountain road. The driver’s side door swung open, and a man wearing a gray polo shirt and blue jeans stepped out onto the gravel.
He walked toward the group of birds, his pace slowing to a quiet crawl as he approached the edge of the pavement where the owl lay immobile. The man lowered himself onto his knees on the hard pavement, bringing his face level with the adult owl. He placed his left hand gently over the bird’s feathered chest, pinning its patterned wings close to its body to prevent it from thrashing on the rough road surface.
Precise Cuts and Quiet Patience
With his other hand, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a pair of blue-handled scissors. The three chicks remained perfectly still in the green grass, their wide black eyes tracking the metallic glint of the blades. He slid the blunt metal tip of the scissors underneath the first thick strand of green plastic wrapped around the bird’s right leg.
The plastic resisted for a split second before snapping open with a sharp, dry click. The owl’s head tilted slightly to the side, its beak opening as if to hiss, but the weight of the man’s hand kept its body calm. He continued working, cutting one strand of the mesh at a time, taking care not to let the sharp edges touch the yellow skin of the talons.
He sliced through the tangled knots that had kept the bird’s legs bound together. With a final snip, the green netting fell away from the owl’s feet, leaving the sharp claws free to move. The man reached down and pulled the loose plastic entirely away from the bird, tossing it onto the gravel shoulder.
He then slid his hands under the owl’s back, lifting the bird’s heavy weight off the asphalt to test its movement. The owl let its wings drape slightly toward the dirt, its claws curling and uncurling as it felt the release of the tight plastic.
Restoring Strength Under the Canopy
The man lowered the owl back onto the roadside grass, letting its body rest on the soft green blades next to its offspring. He reached for a clear plastic bottle of water and unscrewed the blue cap with his thumb and forefinger. Holding the bottle just a few inches above the owl’s chest, he tipped it forward slowly.
A thin stream of water trickled down over the bird’s patterned feathers, dampening the dry brown and white markings. The cool water pooled on the bird’s chest, slicking down the feathers while the three chicks watched, their small heads bobbing in unison as the droplets splashed onto the grass.
The man then reached into a small plastic container and pulled out a small piece of raw, pink meat. He held it out on the tips of his fingers toward the closest chick. The young bird stepped forward, its beak opening wide to accept the food.
The man carefully placed the meat inside the chick’s beak, watching as it swallowed the bite in one quick motion. He repeated the process for the other chicks, offering each one a small portion as they stood quietly by the roadside. The man knelt on his knees in the roadside grass, holding a piece of raw meat out to the four fluffy chicks as they stood in a row near the forest edge.
