The Roadblock on the Mountain Pass
The dog stood on its hind legs, pressing its front paws firmly against the rough bark of a pine log. Behind the log, a white police cruiser sat with its blue and red lights flashing against the gray afternoon sky. The mountain road was wet, reflecting the tall pine trees and the snow-dusted peaks in the distance.
The driver-side door swung open, and a female officer stepped onto the damp asphalt. She adjusted her utility belt, looking down at the Shiba Inu who remained locked in place, staring directly back at her. Her boots clicked against the road as she took a cautious step forward.
Suddenly, the dog dropped to all fours, lunged into the open cabin of the patrol car, and clamped its jaws around a heavy black tactical bag. Before the officer could reach out, the dog spun around and sprinted down the winding road.
A Pursuit Along the Rushing River
The officer’s boots pounded against the wet asphalt as she gave chase. “Stop!” she yelled, her voice echoing off the rocky cliffs as she pointed down the road. Her arms pumped at her sides, and her breathing grew heavy as she struggled to keep pace with the nimble four-legged runner.
Ahead, the Shiba Inu carried the black bag easily, its tail curled tight over its back as it navigated the curves of the mountain pass. The rushing sound of a nearby river grew louder, filling the canyon with the roar of churning water.
The dog veered off the road and onto the gravel bank, its paws kicking up small gray stones. Without slowing its stride, the pup reached the edge of the steep drop-off and launched itself directly into the white-water rapids below.
An Unexpected Eruption
As the dog hit the water, a massive plume of white spray shot skyward like a geyser. Rocks and water blasted upward, throwing debris high into the air as the river seemed to explode.
The officer skidded to a stop at the water’s edge, her boots slipping on the wet rocks. Her eyes widened, her mouth fell open, and she pulled her hands to her face, pressing her fingers against her cheeks as tears began to stream down. She stared at the turbulent foam where the dog had vanished, her shoulders shaking as she wept.
Suddenly, the surface of the river broke again. The Shiba Inu erupted from the rapids in a massive leap, shaking water from its fur as it landed back in the shallower, calmer current near the shore.
A Wet and Joyful Reunion
The officer’s tears turned to a wide grin as she wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. She stepped directly into the cold, shallow water, ignoring the wetness soaking through her uniform trousers.
The dog trotted toward her, its fur dripping but its posture relaxed as it shook its head to clear the water from its ears. The officer dropped to her knees on the river rocks, splashing water as she reached out to pull the dog close.
She wrapped both arms tightly around the wet Shiba Inu, burying her face in its neck as she laughed. The dog leaned its weight against her shoulder, its tail wagging slowly in the cold mountain stream.
