A Loyal Guide on the Curb
The golden retriever stood on the grassy curb, his tail swinging slowly as his eyes locked onto the white ambulance driving down the residential street.
The emergency vehicle slowed to a crawl and pulled up close to the curb right in front of him, its red lights flashing across the green lawns of the neighborhood.
The dog stepped forward off the grass, placing his front paws onto the asphalt as the vehicle stopped completely.
The passenger side door swung open, and a paramedic dressed in light blue scrubs stepped down onto the pavement.
She leaned down immediately, placing both hands on the dog’s shoulders and rubbing his fur as he looked up into her face.
The dog leaned into her touch for a brief second before spinning around and pointing his nose down the center of the street.
The Lead Down the Street
The dog took off at a jog, his golden fur bouncing with each stride as he kicked his legs back.
The paramedic started running right behind him, her black athletic shoes striking the asphalt in a steady, fast pace.
She kept her eyes on the dog’s tail as he navigated the middle of the road, leading her away from the ambulance left parked behind them.
The dog checked over his shoulder twice, making sure the woman in scrubs was keeping up with his speed.
The road stretched out ahead of them, lined with green lawns, driveways, and single-family homes under a bright afternoon sky.
As they moved, the dog kept his head high, ears flopping with each stride, maintaining a direct line down the asphalt.
The paramedic kept her hands slightly raised as she ran, her ponytail swinging side to side while she followed the canine guide.
The sound of their footsteps echoed lightly off the pavement as they ran deeper into the residential neighborhood, leaving the ambulance far behind.
The dog’s panting was steady, his pink tongue hanging out of the side of his mouth, but he did not slow down his pace.
A Cry for Help
The golden retriever began to slow his pace as he approached a bend in the road, turning his head toward the asphalt ahead.
A pregnant woman knelt in the very center of the street, her knees resting on the dark pavement.
She wore a beige cardigan over a light-colored top, her hands clasped tightly over her round stomach.
The woman’s chest rose and fell rapidly, her eyes squeezed shut as her head tilted toward the sky.
The paramedic slowed her run to a quick walk, stepping up to the kneeling woman and immediately lowering herself to the ground.
She placed one hand gently on the woman’s shoulder and her other hand on the woman’s forearm, leaning in close to speak to her.
The golden retriever stood just inches away, his tail wagging in slow, low arcs as his eyes darted between the two women.
The pregnant woman let her head drop forward, her shoulders relaxing slightly as the paramedic whispered to her and supported her weight.
The medic looked over the woman’s condition, checking her breathing and placing a comforting hand on her back.
A New Member of the Family
At the local hospital, the white ambulance backed up toward the sliding glass doors beneath the red emergency sign.
The red brake lights illuminated the brick wall as the vehicle came to a stop in the ambulance bay.
Inside a brightly lit hospital room, the mother sat up in her bed, wearing a blue-and-white patterned hospital gown.
She smiled widely, her face bright as she looked over at the paramedic standing beside her bed.
The paramedic held a tiny, swaddled newborn in her arms, cradling the baby close to her chest and looking down at the sleeping child.
The golden retriever stood up on his hind legs, resting his front paws on the white sheets of the hospital bed.
The mother reached out with her right hand, running her fingers over the top of the dog’s head while he leaned his nose against her arm.
