The Morning Visitor
A golden, shaggy dog stepped onto the wet concrete outside the hospital entrance, gripping a single purple flower tightly in his jaws.
He trotted past two onlookers who stopped to watch, his tail wagging in a slow, rhythmic circle as he approached the automatic glass doors of St. Mark’s.
Inside the lobby, a doctor pointed toward the floor as the dog padded across the welcome mat, this time carrying a bright yellow sunflower.
A nurse at the reception desk leaned over the counter, her eyes widening as the dog held his head high, keeping the green stem perfectly balanced between his teeth.
He did not bark or look for food; instead, he walked with a quiet, deliberate focus toward the elevators, ignored by the busy staff who had grown used to his presence.
The daily deliveries had become a mystery that no one could solve, yet everyone looked forward to the splash of color he brought through the sliding doors.
The Routine at Room 312
The dog stopped in the middle of a brightly lit hallway and sat down directly in front of the door marked Room 312, which featured a hand-drawn sign of a dog on the front.
He remained there for several minutes, staring at the closed wooden door while holding a bunch of purple hyacinths.
Slowly, he lowered his head, let his jaw relax, and placed the flowers gently onto the linoleum floor right against the doorframe.
He took a step back, looked at the offering once more, and then turned to walk back down the corridor with his head down.
Watching from the end of the hallway, a nurse in blue scrubs decided she needed to understand where this dog was coming from and why he chose this specific room.
The next morning, she waited by the entrance, adjusted her badge, and quietly followed him as he made his daily journey down the sunlit city sidewalks.
A Garden Hidden in the Back
The dog led the nurse away from the busy streets and toward a small, older cottage surrounded by an overgrown garden bursting with foxgloves, marigolds, and roses.
He stepped into a patch of wildflowers, sniffing the blossoms before carefully biting down on a stem to harvest his next delivery.
On the porch of the empty house, the nurse found a stack of old, weathered photographs sitting on a wicker chair near a potted plant.
As she looked at the first image, tears spilled over her cheeks, her chest rising and falling quickly as she pulled a hand to her mouth to quiet her breathing.
The photos showed a younger, vibrant woman smiling widely while hugging the very same golden dog when he was just a small puppy running through the grass.
The woman in those pictures was the current patient inside Room 312, who had rescued the stray dog from the streets years prior before falling ill and entering the care facility.
A Quiet Reunion
Back inside the hospital room, the elderly woman sat upright in her bed, holding the photographs in her hands while her visitor sat right beside her on the mattress.
The golden dog stood on the edge of the blanket, his front paws resting on the white sheets as he looked up into her face with soft, steady eyes.
The woman’s eyes crinkled with joy, and she reached out to stroke his soft ears, her fingers trembling slightly against his fur as she remembered their years together.
Several colorful vases filled with tulips, roses, and daisies lined the windowsill behind her, catching the warm morning light and filling the room with sweet scents.
The dog closed his eyes and let his head sink into her palm, letting out a soft sigh as her wrinkled hand slowly and repeatedly stroked his head.
