Dog Joins Ocean Rescue Team to Save Trapped Marine Life

A Dog in the Deep Blue

The golden retriever’s teeth clamped down on the edge of the plastic mesh net as a wave broke over his head.

He kicked his paws beneath the surface, navigating through a thick layer of floating water bottles and debris that coated the ocean waves.

With a steady, rhythmic pull, the dog dragged the green net toward a red rescue boat waiting nearby, his eyes fixed on the crew.

Two men wearing white protective suits and yellow helmets leaned far over the side of the hull to assist.

They reached down, grasping the dog’s harness and lifting him upward as he scrambled his paws against the wet, slippery side of the vessel.

Once safely on board, the dog shook the seawater from his golden coat, his tail sweeping back and forth against the red deck as the rescuers emptied the net of trash.

The rescue boat accelerated, cutting a white wake through the choppy, trash-filled ocean water.

The dog took his position at the very tip of the bow, his nose pointing forward into the salty wind as spray misted his face.

An Unexpected Obstacle

A dark shape broke the surface just ahead of the boat, surrounded by a thick tangle of seaweed and discarded plastic.

It was a dolphin, struggling to keep its blowhole above the water under the weight of a heavy black car tire wedged tightly around its midsection.

The dog slid back into the water without a sound, paddling directly toward the struggling marine mammal to offer support.

Behind him, one of the rescuers plunged into the sea, splashing down next to the dolphin’s dorsal fin with tools in hand.

The rescuer reached out, stabilizing the dolphin’s slick body against the constant roll of the swells.

He pulled a metal hand saw from his gear belt and positioned the serrated teeth against the thick, reinforced rubber of the tire.

The dog swam in a tight circle, keeping his chest close to the dolphin’s side, his eyes locked on the rescuer’s hands.

The Long Cut

The rescuer drew the saw back and forth, the metal teeth buzzing against the tough, steel-belted rubber of the tire.

White water and foam churned around them as the rescuer put his full weight into each stroke of the blade, careful not to nick the animal’s skin.

With a sharp pop, the thick rubber finally parted, and the rescuer pulled the heavy tire free, tossing it away into the open water behind them.

He took a soft yellow cloth and gently wiped away the remnants of algae, sand, and oil from the dolphin’s grey skin.

The dolphin sank slightly into the cool water, then rose again, taking a deep, clear breath through its blowhole.

The dog swam alongside the freed animal, his snout nudging its flank as the dolphin adjusted to its restored freedom of movement.

Cleaning the Sea

Back on the red boat, the crew lowered long-handled nets into the water to scoop up the remaining floating plastic bottles.

The dog stood tall on the bow once more, watching the green nets lift piles of debris out of the ocean and into the boat’s storage bins.

The dolphin leaped high out of the water, twisting its body in the air before splashing down with a loud slap beside the boat.
