A Dangerous Step On The Wooden Pier
The young man lifted his neon tennis shoe and placed it squarely on the wet wooden railing of the fishing pier.
He balanced on the narrow beam, holding his smartphone high in the air to record his own face as seagulls circled overhead.
Nearby, an older fisherman in a green shirt and bucket hat stood quietly, his attention focused on the fishing rod in his hands.
The young man shouted insults into his phone, mocking the older man for wasting his time fishing instead of chasing views online.
He stepped forward, balancing on the damp railing with his arms spread wide like a tightrope walker over the crashing waves.
The fisherman turned his head, pointing his hand toward the splashing water below.
“Get down off that wet railing, son,” the older man warned, his voice calm but firm. “The water is rougher than it looks today.”
A Slip Into The Ocean Waves
Ignoring the warning, the younger man took another step, his focus entirely locked onto his glowing screen as he laughed at his followers’ comments.
His foot slid on the slick wood, and his arms flailed wildly in the air in an attempt to recover his balance.
The smartphone flew from his grip, clattering onto the pier before bouncing over the edge and out of sight.
With a loud splash, the young man tumbled backward over the edge and fell straight into the churning sea.
The fisherman dropped his rod instantly, leaning far over the heavy wooden barrier to locate the fallen walker.
Below him, the young man struggled against the strong current, his head bobbing up and down as he gasped for air and splashed frantically.
The older man reached down, his hands extending toward the water as the young man clawed at the air for a handhold.
A Veteran’s Strong Grip
The fisherman caught the young man’s wrist, locking his fingers tight around the wet sleeve of his colorful jacket.
He planted his feet firmly against the bottom of the railing, using his entire upper body strength to pull the heavy weight upward.
With a steady lift, he hauled the soaking-wet young man up over the wood and onto the solid deck of the pier.
The young man collapsed onto the wooden planks, coughing up seawater and catching his breath as he sat on his hands and knees.
The older man stood over him, rolling back his sleeves to reveal a military veteran tattoo on his forearm.
“I pulled men out of worse water than this in the army, son,” the fisherman said, looking down at the shivering young man.
A Complete Change of Heart
The young man sat on the wet deck, his shoulders slumped and his chin resting against his chest.
The colorful jacket that had looked so bright minutes before was now dark, heavy, and dripping with saltwater.
He looked down at his hands, his fingers trembling as he realized how close he had come to drowning in the rough current.
Slowly, he shifted his weight and lowered his knees to the wooden planks, clasping his hands together in a quiet gesture of apology.
“You saved me after I insulted you,” he whispered, his voice cracking as he kept his eyes on the floorboards. “I do not even deserve it. I am so sorry, sir.”
The veteran watched him for a moment before kneeling down onto the wood, placing a warm hand on the young man’s wet shoulder.
“Everybody is worth saving, son,” the older man said softly, his expression turning gentle.
“Now put that phone away and come sit,” he added, rising back to his feet. “I will show you how to fish.”
The young man stood up, wiping the water from his face with his sleeve.
The older man handed him the fishing rod, and the two stood side by side facing the open ocean.
