A Sudden Separation on the Pavement
A mother duck stands on the edge of a gravel roadside, her webbed feet shifting against the loose stones. Behind her, a line of small, downy ducklings follows in a tight, frantic huddle. The mother pauses, turning her head back as a white car cruises past on the asphalt, the hum of the engine creating a vibration that reaches the tiny birds. As the car clears the path, one duckling remains isolated in the middle of the road, separated from the safety of the verge by the unpredictable flow of vehicles.
The mother duck lets out a sharp, rhythmic quack that echoes against the stone walls lining the lane. She makes a quick movement toward the road, but the looming presence of another vehicle forces her to retreat back to the grass. The duckling in the road stands motionless, its head bobbing slightly, looking from the distant hedge to the path where its family waits. It takes a tentative step forward on its thin, orange legs, then stops again as a black SUV passes by, the wind of its motion ruffling the yellow down on the creature’s back.
The Unexpected Intervention
A man in an orange polo shirt enters the frame from the right, his boots crunching loudly on the gravel. He walks with a purpose, his eyes locked on the small, isolated bird in the center of the lane. He stops several feet away, lowering his frame until his knees press into the rough pavement. He pulls a plastic water bottle from his pocket, but instead of using it for himself, he unscrews the cap and tips the contents onto the road. A small pool of water forms on the cracked surface, a target designed to draw the duckling closer to the edge.
The man extends a hand, his fingers splayed flat against the tarmac, gesturing toward the grassy verge. The duckling turns, its gaze shifting between the man’s hand and the sound of its mother, who is still calling from the weeds. The man remains hunched, keeping his movements fluid and slow, avoiding any sudden jerks that might cause the bird to bolt into the path of an oncoming vehicle. He slowly pivots his body, creating a physical barrier between the road traffic and the duckling’s path to the side.
Gathering the Family
The man waits until the duckling is within reach, then closes his hands gently around its small, trembling body. He holds the bird securely but lightly, feeling the rapid, rhythmic beating of its heart against his palm. He stands up carefully, his gaze moving toward the pond located a short distance away behind a stone border. He walks toward the water’s edge, where the mother duck waits, her wings fluttering slightly as she moves back and forth in anticipation.
The man reaches the grassy bank and kneels down one last time, opening his hands over the ground. The duckling scampers forward, its legs moving at high speed as it navigates the final few inches to reach the safety of the group. The mother duck dips her head toward the duckling, letting out a series of quiet, soft whistles. The entire brood settles into a tight cluster, bobbing in the water near the grass. The man remains kneeling on the bank, watching as the mother swims away from the shore, the ducklings paddling in a perfect, unbroken line behind her.
