A Cry For Help From The Well
A golden retriever puppy balanced on the damp, mossy edge of a circular stone well, staring into the dark hole below. At the bottom sat an adult golden retriever, her coat soiled with dirt, looking up with wide eyes. The puppy stretched his neck forward, sniffing the cool air rising from the stone pit.
The puppy threw his head back, letting out a series of high-pitched whines and sharp howls. The sound echoed off the stone walls of the deep pit. From the shadows below, the trapped dog let out a deep, echoing bark, her tail sweeping against the dirt floor.
The puppy paced the narrow stone rim, his tail tucked low. He scrambled down the stone base, kicked up dry leaves, and ran toward the gravel path leading to the paved road.
An Unusual Roadside Obstacle
A black sedan rounded the bend, its tires humming against the hot asphalt. The puppy ran directly into the center of the lane and stopped, facing the oncoming grille of the car. He pushed his weight onto his hind legs, standing upright with his front paws curled against his chest.
The car’s brakes squealed as it came to a halt just inches from the small dog. The puppy stayed upright, blinking into the headlights, refusing to move. The driver’s side door clicked open, and a woman stepped out, her eyebrows furrowed as she watched the puppy.
The puppy dropped to all fours, barked once, and spun around. He trotted a few yards toward the brush, then stopped to look over his shoulder, ensuring the woman was following. She walked behind him, her sneakers crunching on the dry grass.
Descending Into The Darkness
The puppy led her straight to the overgrown stone well and stood on his hind legs to peer inside. The woman leaned over the edge, gasping as her eyes adjusted to the shadows. The adult dog barked from the bottom, her tail thumping against the damp ground.
The woman looked around, spotted a thick hemp rope tied to a nearby post, and tossed the loose end into the well. She grabbed the rough fibers, swung her legs over the stone ledge, and braced her feet against the masonry. Slowly, she lowered herself into the pit, hand over hand.
As soon as her feet touched the dirt, the adult dog leaped up, pressing her head against the woman’s legs. The woman knelt in the dust, wrapping her arms around the dog’s neck, feeling the rapid rise and fall of her chest.
Safely Back On Solid Ground
The woman stood up, hooking her left arm firmly under the dog’s chest while wrapping her right hand around the rope. She pulled her body upward, using her thigh muscles to push off the stone walls. The dog remained still in her grip, trusting her weight to the climber.
With a final heave, the woman pulled both of them over the stone lip, collapsing onto the grassy clearing. The puppy immediately rushed over, his tail wagging so hard his entire body shook as he sniffed his companion’s face.
The woman knelt on the grass, unscrewed a plastic water bottle, and tilted it. A stream of water fell into the adult dog’s mouth, splashing onto her tongue. The puppy hopped around them, barking and panting as the woman ran her fingers through the mother dog’s wet fur.
