An Enticing Trap in the Park
The red squirrel hopped onto the rim of the clear plastic container, eye on the cherry at the bottom.
With a quick leap, the small rodent dove inside to claim the sweet fruit.
It sat on the plastic floor, holding the cherry in its paws and quickly nibbling it down to the stone.
But when the snack was finished, the squirrel turned its attention to escaping the tall container.
It pressed its front paws against the smooth, transparent wall and tried to scramble upward.
Its claws found no grip on the slick plastic surface, causing it to slide back to the bottom instantly.
The squirrel tried again, leaping toward the rim, but fell short and tumbled backward.
It began pacing the perimeter of the bin, scratching frantically at the corners in search of a foothold.
Each attempt to climb ended with the animal sliding down, its tail twitching with growing urgency.
A Passerby Steps In to Help
A man walking down the paved park path noticed the frantic movement inside the discarded container.
He slowed his pace, detouring off the main walkway to inspect the plastic tub sitting near the stone curb.
The man’s backpack shifted as he bent lower, his knees resting near the hard stone walkway.
Peering inside, he saw the small red squirrel looking up at him, its paws pressed against the plastic wall.
The man knelt on the pavement, placing his hands on the outer rim of the deep bin to stabilize it.
He slowly reached both hands down into the container, keeping his movements deliberate to avoid startling the animal.
His fingers closed gently around the squirrel’s midsection, feeling the rapid rise and fall of its tiny chest.
The squirrel did not run or bite; instead, it stood still, watching the large hands descend toward it.
He gently cupped his hands beneath the squirrel’s belly and lifted it slowly out of the plastic trap.
The squirrel remained calm, resting quietly in the palms of his hands as it breathed heavily.
Providing Much-Needed Nourishment
The man held the squirrel securely in one hand while reaching for a plastic water bottle with his other.
He unscrewed the cap and tilted the bottle, letting a small stream of water pool near the opening.
Water droplets fell onto the pavement below, dark circles appearing on the dry gray stone.
The squirrel leaned forward, eagerly lapping up the moisture directly from the bottle neck.
The squirrel held its head high, tilting its nose back to catch the gentle flow of water.
It drank continuously for several seconds, its small tongue moving rapidly to catch every drop.
The man adjusted his grip, supporting the animal’s weight as it quenched its thirst in the warm park air.
After the squirrel finished drinking, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a handful of raw almonds.
He offered the nuts on his open palm, holding them right in front of the squirrel’s twitching nose.
The squirrel grabbed an almond with its front paws and immediately began gnawing on the hard shell.
It sat comfortably on the man’s hand, munching on the nut while looking around the park.
A Safe Return to the Trees
The squirrel quickly finished its snack, leaving small crumbs on the man’s open palm.
It shifted its weight, turning its body toward the nearby stone ledge and the grassy lawn beyond.
With a sudden, energetic push, the squirrel launched itself from the man’s hand onto the stone curb.
The man watched as the red squirrel scampered across the grass and headed straight toward a large tree trunk.
