A Leap Off The Edge
The golden retriever gripped the metal edge of the truck bed with its front paws, leaning far out into the rushing wind.
Its amber eyes locked onto the open door of a red passenger train roaring along the parallel tracks.
The distance between the moving pickup truck and the train cabin closed rapidly as the road curved closer to the rails.
The dog bunched its hind legs, tensed its muscles, and launched its entire body through the air across the gap.
It cleared the gravel divider, flying cleanly through the open doorway of the speeding passenger car.
The dog slid across the smooth linoleum floor, quickly regaining its footing and shaking its coat.
Alerting The Engineer
The dog scrambled forward through the narrow corridor, heading straight toward the front compartment of the locomotive.
In the main control room, the train operator sat at his console, looking out at the straight stretch of track ahead.
Suddenly, the retriever burst into the cabin, barking loudly and jumping up to press its front paws against the driver’s chest.
The man shrank back into his seat, his hands rising as he tried to push the sudden intruder away.
The dog continued to bark sharply, turning its head toward the windshield and then back to the operator, nudging the man’s arm with its wet nose.
The operator looked out the front window, his eyes squinting as he scanned the horizon but seeing nothing out of the ordinary.
A Helpless Target Ahead
A half-mile down the track, a small, cream-colored puppy lay motionless between the heavy iron rails.
Thick, coarse hemp rope was wound multiple times around the young dog’s torso, pinning its legs to the wooden ties.
The puppy raised its head, letting out a series of high-pitched yips as the distant rumble of the train grew louder.
Sunlight glinted off the front of the oncoming engine as it accelerated down the mountain pass, closing the distance second by second.
Back inside the cab, the adult retriever realized the operator was not slowing the massive vehicle down.
The dog dropped to all fours, its focus shifting directly to the large black emergency brake handle protruding from the main console.
Taking Control Of The Cabin
The retriever lunged forward, clamping its jaws firmly around the rubber grip of the brake lever.
With its feet planted firmly on the metal floor, the dog pulled backward with its entire weight, dragging the lever down into the lock position.
The operator’s shoulders tensed as he watched the brakes engage, sending a violent shudder through the entire length of the train.
Underneath the carriages, steel brake pads clamped hard against the spinning wheels, sending bright orange sparks spraying onto the gravel path.
The heavy locomotive screeched loudly, its momentum slowing dramatically as it slid closer and closer to the bound puppy.
The train ground to a complete halt, its front bumper stopping mere inches from where the small dog lay shivering on the tracks.
The operator and the adult retriever quickly made their way down the side steps of the train cab and jogged to the front of the locomotive.
The man knelt on the wooden ties, his fingers working quickly to unwrap the rough ropes from the puppy’s body.
Once freed, the young pup rolled onto its back, kicking its legs in the air while the adult retriever nudged its nose, and the driver placed a hand on the older dog’s back.
