An Urgent Chase On The Highway
The black and white border collie sprinted along the grassy shoulder, keeping pace with the speeding red flatbed truck.
On the flatbed, massive stacks of dried hay bales burned with bright orange flames, sending thick columns of black smoke billowing into the sky.
The driver sat inside the red cab, his sunglasses on and his eyes focused forward on the empty road ahead, completely unaware of the fire spreading behind him.
The dog barked repeatedly, his paws striking the grass as he pushed his body to run faster alongside the moving tires.
He kept his eyes locked on the cab, refusing to slow down as the truck continued down the two-lane highway.
He knew he had to get the driver’s attention before the flames reached the fuel tank of the truck.
Getting The Driver’s Attention
The dog leaped from the grass onto the hot asphalt, running directly parallel to the driver’s side door.
The driver glanced out his left window, his brow furrowing as he saw the black and white shape moving at high speed next to his vehicle.
The dog jumped into the air, his front paws hitting the side of the red door panel as he barked directly at the glass.
He repeated the jump, scraping his nails against the metal and pointing his snout toward the burning flatbed.
The driver gripped the steering wheel and guided the truck off the main road, the tires kicking up dust as the vehicle slowed to a stop on the gravel shoulder.
The driver pushed the heavy door open and climbed down, his boots hitting the gravel as the dog continued to bark and circle him.
A Sudden Discovery
The driver turned around and looked toward the back of his flatbed, his mouth opening wide and his hands dropping to his sides.
Massive flames engulfed the upper layers of the hay bales, turning the dry straw into a roaring wall of fire.
Several burning pieces of hay fell from the top of the stack, landing on the dry asphalt below.
He spun around, lunged back into the cab, and emerged holding a heavy red fire extinguisher in both hands.
He pulled the safety pin with a swift tug, pointed the black horn at the base of the nearest flames, and squeezed the metal handle.
A thick stream of white chemical foam erupted from the nozzle, coating the burning straw and turning the black smoke into white steam.
He swept the nozzle back and forth, targeting the hot spots along the side of the flatbed.
The dog stood back on the grass, his tail wagging slightly as he watched the man move around the truck, spraying the hot embers.
Safe By The Roadside
The driver lowered the extinguisher, his chest rising and falling heavily as the last of the flames hissed and died under the white blanket of foam.
A steady stream of water and foam dripped from the charred straw onto the wet shoulder of the road.
He dropped the empty red cylinder onto the dry grass and sank to his knees, his shoulders relaxing as he let out a long breath.
He opened both arms wide, and the border collie ran straight into his chest, tail wagging furiously.
The man wrapped his arms around the dog’s neck, squeezing him tight and burying his face in the soft black and white fur.
The dog licked the side of the man’s neck as the man stroked his back, both of them sitting quietly in the warm afternoon light.
Above them, a flock of birds flew in a V-formation across the sky, leaving the smoking red truck behind on the quiet highway.
