An Unexpected Roadside Discovery
The green plastic netting wrapped tighter around the owl’s talons as it lay flat on its back beside the asphalt road.
Its chest rose and fell in quick, shallow breaths while its large yellow eyes stared straight up at the sky.
Just inches away, three small, fluffy baby owls stood shoulder to shoulder in the grass, watching their mother struggle against the plastic.
A white SUV rounded the mountain curve, its brakes squeaking lightly as the driver spotted the birds on the shoulder.
The vehicle slowed to a crawl and came to a stop, its hazard lights blinking against the dark pine trees lining the highway.
The driver’s side door swung open, and a man wearing an orange t-shirt and blue jeans stepped out onto the pavement.
He walked directly toward the birds, his boots clicking softly against the dry asphalt as he closed the distance between them.
A Delicate Operation
The man knelt down in the dirt right beside the helpless family, pulling a pair of blue-handled scissors from his front pocket.
The three chicks shuffled backward slightly but did not run, keeping their dark eyes locked onto the kneeling stranger.
He slid the metal blade carefully under the first loop of the thick green mesh, avoiding the owl’s sharp black talons.
With a clean snip, the first strand of plastic parted, releasing a small amount of tension from the bird’s bound legs.
The mother owl remained completely still, her wings spread flat against the dirt as the man worked through the remaining knots.
He snipped strand after strand, slowly peeling back the heavy plastic webbing until her legs were completely free from the trap.
He gathered the discarded green netting and tossed it aside, ensuring the sharp plastic would not tangle the birds again.
Restoration and Recovery
Once the net was cleared, the man reached into his vehicle for a plastic water bottle and unscrewed the blue cap.
He tipped the bottle forward, letting a thin stream of cool water cascade over the owl’s dry feathers and chest.
The bird blinked rapidly, her beak parting slightly as the water splashed onto her face and cooled her body after the ordeal.
The chicks watched closely, tilting their heads in unison as the water droplets rolled off their mother’s patterned chest.
Suddenly, the mother owl rolled her weight to the side, pushed off the ground with her wings, and sat upright on her talons.
The three chicks immediately pressed their bodies against hers, chirping softly as she adjusted to being upright once more.
A Shared Meal
The rescuer opened a small plastic container filled with fresh, raw meat and set it on the grass in front of them.
He pinched a small piece of meat between his fingers and held it out toward the hungry family on the roadside.
The mother owl leaned forward, took the food gently from his hand, and swallowed it in a single motion.
Seeing their mother eat, the three chicks quickly scrambled forward, grabbing pieces of meat directly from the container.
The man smiled and watched quietly as the four owls feasted together on the grassy shoulder of the quiet mountain road.
