The Fallen Wing
A white egret collided with the windshield of a black SUV traveling down a quiet rural road. The impact sent a burst of white feathers into the air, and the bird tumbled onto the grassy shoulder.
The SUV continued driving, leaving the injured bird motionless on the grass. A golden-brown mixed-breed dog trotted out from the field and approached the fallen creature, sniffing its side.
The dog nudged the feathers with his nose, his ears twitching as he looked down the long stretch of asphalt. He watched the black vehicle disappear in the distance, then sprinted after it.
His paws kicked up dust along the edge of the asphalt as he chased the car. He kept his eyes locked on the distant vehicle, refusing to lose its trail as he ran.
The Audacious Heist
The black SUV pulled into a roadside gas station, stopping next to a fuel pump. The driver rolled down his window and held out a stack of paper bills to pay for his fuel.
Before the attendant could reach the money, the golden-brown dog lunged forward. He jumped up, clamped his jaws around the cash, and snatched it from the man’s hand.
The driver stared with his mouth open, his eyes wide as the dog landed on the pavement and bolted. The station worker raised her hand, pointing at the dog fleeing back toward the highway.
The driver threw his car door open and chased the animal, shouting loudly. The dog sprinted down the road, holding the green bills tightly in his mouth as he ran back the way he came.
A Surprising Discovery
The dog finally slowed to a trot, steering off the asphalt and into the grass. He dropped the cash right next to the injured egret, sitting down beside the bird and panting.
The driver caught up, gasping for air and clenching his fists, but stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the scene. The money lay scattered on the grass beside the struggling white bird.
The man knelt down, his shoulders dropping as he looked from the cash to the injured bird. He reached out with both hands and gently lifted the bird, cradling its fragile body.
The dog stood up, wagging his tail as he trotted alongside the man back to the vehicle. They drove directly to a nearby veterinary clinic, the dog leading the way through the sliding doors.
Back to the Sky
Inside the clinic, a veterinary doctor placed the white bird onto a metal examination table. The man and the dog stood close by, watching the doctor carefully examine the bird’s damaged wing.
The dog rested his chin on the edge of the table, whimpering softly as the doctor applied a clean white bandage. The man reached down to pet the dog’s head, keeping him calm during the procedure.
After a period of recovery, the group gathered in a forest clearing surrounded by tall pine trees. The doctor set the bird down, and it slowly extended its long, elegant wings.
The egret flapped its wings, lifting off the ground and rising high into the evening sky. The man and his dog stood together in the clearing, watching the white bird disappear over the treeline.
