The Unexpected Roadblock
The golden retriever ran down the center of the snowy road directly ahead of the massive red snowplow.
Its paws kicked up loose powder as the truck’s heavy metal plow blade scraped the asphalt, spraying thick sheets of white snow into the air.
Instead of veering off into the safe cover of the pine trees, the dog turned and faced the oncoming vehicle.
The dog leaped directly onto the top of the moving plow blade and scrambled up the front grill toward the windshield.
The dog stood firmly on the hood, throwing its head back to bark repeatedly through the glass at the driver inside.
The driver pulled the emergency brake, bringing the heavy truck to a halt, and threw open the cab door.
He stepped down into the deep drifts, and the dog immediately spun around, trotting a few yards forward before looking back over its shoulder.
A Deep Pit of Ice
The man kept pace, his heavy insulated boots sinking into the fresh powder as they ran along the edge of a steep mountain road.
The dog stopped at the very lip of a dark, narrow crevasse that cut deep into the solid mountain ice sheet.
The driver leaned over the rocky edge, gripping his yellow hardhat with one hand, and peered down into the darkness.
The dog let out a sharp howl down into the hole, its tail moving back and forth in rapid, erratic sweeps.
Deep inside the frozen pit, two small golden retriever puppies huddled close together on a cold dirt ledge, shivering against the damp air.
The driver turned and ran back toward the red utility truck, his arms pumping as he hurried to reach the vehicle’s mounted crane hoist.
He climbed back into the driver’s seat, shifted the gears, and carefully backed the truck closer to the edge of the deep crevasse.
The Descent Into the Chasm
The mechanical crane arm rotated slowly over the side of the cliff, lowering a woven transport basket attached to heavy steel cables.
The adult dog stepped directly into the basket as it hovered at the edge of the cliff, sitting quietly as the winch began to spool out.
The basket descended past sheer walls of blue ice, dripping water, and hanging icicles that lined the dark pit.
When the basket finally touched the rocky floor of the crevasse, the adult dog immediately stepped out onto the wet stones.
The dog approached the two shivering puppies and nudged them gently with its wet nose to encourage them to move.
The adult dog picked up the first puppy by the scruff of its neck, placing it carefully into the center of the basket.
It then nudged the second puppy, helping it scramble over the high wicker edge of the transport basket.
The driver operated the crane controls from the surface, slowly winching the basket back up through the narrow opening.
Warmth Inside the Cab
The two puppies curled into a tight, warm ball inside the basket as it cleared the top of the frozen rocky ledge.
The driver reached out with his gloved hands, lifting the basket onto the solid ground before helping the mother dog back up to safety.
Inside the heated cab of the utility truck, a thick brown blanket was spread across the passenger seat to protect the shivering animals.
The puppies lay nestled together in the warmth of the heater while the mother dog licked their wet fur to dry them off.
The driver sat close beside them, holding a biscuit in his hand as the mother dog licked the puppies clean on the warm blanket.
