A Sudden Fall
The elephant’s heavy front foot stepped onto the center of the wooden bridge, causing the thick hemp ropes to fray and snap instantly.
The wooden planks splintered and gave way under the immense weight. The giant mammal and the golden retriever sitting on its back tumbled down into the white water below.
The dog fought the current, paddling hard to keep its head above the rushing river. It washed ashore on a rocky bank, coughing up river water before scrambling onto the shore.
Behind it, the elephant struggled to find footing. The powerful current dragged the massive animal toward the edge of a second, larger waterfall, leaving it trapped in the deep pool below.
The Search For Help
The dog shook the water from its wet coat and turned toward the thick green jungle. It sprinted through the dense ferns, its paws kicking up mud as it navigated the wild forest floor.
The path was steep and slick, but the dog kept its pace, leaping over fallen logs and pushing through thick brush. It finally reached a dirt road, muddy and filled with deep puddles from recent rain.
It pushed forward, running toward a group of tents and a parked green rescue helicopter. Two rescue workers in orange jumpsuits stood near the aircraft, preparing gear.
The dog stood on its hind legs, front paws raised, barking sharply at the men. The pilot leaned down, studying the dog’s wet fur and intense gaze.
“All right, let’s go,” the pilot said, picking the dog up and carrying it into the helicopter’s open side door. The rotors spun up, and the helicopter lifted into the gray sky, heading back toward the river.
A Brave Leap
The helicopter hovered directly over the roaring waterfall, the spray misting the windshield. The dog stood at the open doorway, its ears flapping in the wind as it looked down at the swirling pool below.
A rescue worker held out a thick yellow rope with a heavy metal carabiner attached to the end. The golden retriever clamped its teeth firmly around the rope.
The dog jumped from the helicopter, dropping feet first into the churning water below. The splash swallowed both the dog and the rope as it plunged beneath the surface.
Under the surface, the water was a blur of bubbles and currents. The dog swam downward, squinting through the blue depths toward the submerged elephant.
Under the Rushing Water
The elephant kicked its legs, struggling to stay buoyant in the deep water. The dog navigated the bubbles, holding the yellow rope tightly in its jaws as it closed the distance.
It reached the harness strapped around the elephant’s torso. Using its teeth and muzzle, the dog pushed the metal carabiner until it clicked shut around the steel D-ring of the harness.
The rope went taut as the helicopter winch began to pull. Slowly, the elephant was lifted out of the river, water pouring from its grey skin as it rose into the air.
The helicopter flew toward the safety of the green mountains, carrying the elephant suspended beneath it. On a high, grassy ridge, a crowd of people in hiking gear pointed toward the sky, clapping and cheering as the rescue team flew overhead.
